Fukushima Should Be Wake-Up Call For U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

International Atomic Energy Agency By Elliott Negin for Eco Watch – On March 11, 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and 50-foot tsunami triggered meltdowns at three of six nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan. It was the one of the worst accidents in the nuclear industry’s 60-year history, contaminating thousands of square miles, displacing more than 150,000 people and costing Japanese taxpayers nearly $100 billion. The disaster was a wake-up call for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). After all, nearly a third of the 104 U.S. reactors operating at the time were General Electric Mark I or Mark II reactors, the same as those in Fukushima. -more-

Remember Fukushima!

5th Year of Full-Blown Crisis

fuku

Professor Albert Einstein prophetically stated decades ago: “The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking, and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophes.”

March 11th is the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami. Several Fukushima nuclear reactors had melt downs, and reactor fuel pools were damaged, resulting in the release of massive amounts of radiation. Here’s what the March 1st 2016 issue of Scientific American says about the prospects for Fukushima/TEPCO on its 5th anniversary: “Today the disaster site remains in crisis mode… Even more troublesome, the plant has yet to stop producing dangerous nuclear waste.”

According to Naohiro Masuda, Chief Decommissioning Officer for Tokyo Electric Power Company (“TEPCO”), the technology required to remove nuclear fuel from the reactors does not exist yet. “There’s huge risk involved. If you make one small mistake, it might cause a huge problem for the local people or even worldwide.”

U.S. nuclear expert and Fairwinds Chief Engineer, Arnie Gunderson said areas cleaned in Fukushima prefecture quickly become recontaminated by radiation blowing in the wind and rain washing radiation down from the hills and into the pacific ocean. His team continues to detect high levels of plutonium which will remain deadly for a quarter of a million years.

What happened at Fukushima can happen at any of the 100 nuclear power plants in the U.S. and nuclear plants around the world. The task before all of humanity is urgent. Never Again!

Many of us want to discuss exactly these questions — in light of today’s presidential politics.
Free Movie– Free Parking– Free Pizza– and lots to discuss.  Come!

Letter to the editor:

"Monsantoman" Clifton Tsuji does it again!

Shame on State Rep. Clift Tsuji. chair of the House Agricultural
committee. For the 2nd year in a row he killed a bill (HB 2564) that
would have created buffer zones around schools to protect against
pesticide drift. What kind of a person won't protect kids from
pesticide poisoning. As a former banker, and "biotech legislator of the
year," he appears more concerned about chemical company profits than
protecting the common good, including children's health and safety.
Tsuji brings shame on the entire Hilo district that he claims to
represent. Come on Hilo --stand up for the kids. Send Tsuji packing.
Let him go back to work for the bank instead of being a tax paid mascot
for Monsanto and other special corporate interests. According to the
Hawaii Campaign spending commission for the current election period
2014-2016, Monsanto was Clifton Tsuji's largest campaign donor by twice
the amount of his 2nd place donor, and not one donation came from the
Hilo district that he supposedly represents as far as I could see on the
list of donors. Most came from Bishop street and Manoa Valley in
Honolulu. How come?
