Stop Bombing Pohakuloa

Stop Military Special Ops on All Islands

Protest! Monday, Dec. 17, 2018

Pohakuloa Main Gate 10 AM- 12 Noon

(carpools leaving Hilo side Komohana and Saddle Rd at 9AM)

The 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) is the largest US live-fire training area outside the continental U.S. The area has been bombed for more than 75 years with millions of live rounds fired annually by all branches of the US military and other countries too. PTA is contaminated with a wide range of military toxins, including Depleted Uranium (DU), which pose serious health hazards. When DU metal is burned (hit with high explosives) it turns into small Depleted Uranium oxide dust particles that can travel great distances and are easily inhaled. These radiation particles once inside the body can cause various cancers and genetic damage to future generations.

Re: Downtown Hilo Post office/federal Bldg. Public rest rooms locked during holiday rush

” On Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 a security guard “Scotty”at the downtown Hilo Post office/Federal Building informed me that the rest rooms in the building would be locked till further notice because homeless people are making a mess in them,” said Jim Albertini.  Albertini said “that is no excuse to lock the public rest rooms, especially during the holiday season when lines and wait times at the post office are very long.”  Albertini said “the homeless and everyone else deserve basic sanitation facilities.  If the rest rooms need to be cleaned more than once a day (like airport rest rooms) then clean them.  Don’t lock them.”  Albertini said he contacted the Congressional offices of Senators Mazie Hirono, Brian Schatz and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard for assistance.  Albertini said his organization has been conducting Friday Peace Vigils outside the Hilo Post office 3:30-5PM since the day after 9-11.  This Friday, Dec. 14 will make week 899.  Albertini said he brings two other senior citizens in his vehicle with him and several other people join in Hilo.  “Two of our vigil participants are 85 years old.  They deserve access to rest room facilities just like everyone else.  What is happening to a sense of human decency in the U.S. that even public rest rooms are now being locked?”  Albertini said the security guard informed him the decision was made by Federal Protective Services.

Draft Environmental Assessment for Naval Special Operations Training November 2018

The U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC) has prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) to supposedly analyze the potential impacts of the Special Ops.  It made a Finding of No Significant Impacts (FONSI).  The finding is a lie.  This massive intrusion into our coastal nearshore waters, public shorelines and public spaces has lots of significant impacts – cultural, environmental, etc., including the expansion and normalization of militarism in our communities.  The public is encouraged to review and provide comments on the Draft EA through Jan. 7, 2019. Comments opposing this military madness can be submitted by email to NFPAC-Receive@navy.mil or by mail to Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific, Attention: Project Manager, EV21.JZ, 258 Makalapa Drive, Ste 100, Pearl Harbor, Hi 96860-3134
