Comments: Aloha Legislators, Our organization strongly opposes SCR 120 and the move to bring private prison corporations to Hawaii to profit off the backs and misery of Native Hawaiians who make up more than 60% of Hawaii prisoners. In 1970, Hawaii had less than 1000 people locked up statewide. Today it’s nearly 6,000. That’s nearly a 6 fold increase when the population has not even doubled. Something is very wrong. Hawaii already has more than enough prison bed space to confine those who are a danger to the community. It’s time we move in a different direction, and start reducing, not expanding Hawaii’s prison population. Private prisons are not interested in reducing prison populations. They want expansion of prisoners and profits. Our organization supports Ohana Ho’opakele’s constructive call for Pu’uhonua or wellness centers, places of healing, on every island, instead of building new prisons to keep locking up more Hawaiians. Pu’uhonua is a traditional Hawaiian right guaranteed under Article 12, Section 7 of the State Constitution. Ho’oponopono is the process of making right and healing individuals, families and our communities. Our organization echos Ohana Ho’opakele’s call: “No More Prisons –public or private! Defeat SCR 120. Pu’uhonua is the way to go.” Mahalo. Jim Albertini, president of Malu ‘Aina
