Doing Important Work!

Whose Job Is It to Protest
War & Injustice?
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it.
Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job.
Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

 Hawaii County Council

Strongly opposes Bill 78 –cutting off county geothermal relocation funds and taking those funds for other reasons

Our organization strongly opposes Bill 78 – cutting off county geothermal relocation funds and taking those funds for other purposes.

This county should not cut off people that could need to relocate when the next accident happens at PGV. The county and state is in a mess with geothermal caused because Kanaka Maoli spiritual beliefs about Pele, an Hawaiian deity, have not been respected. Drilling into Pele is sacrilegious. In addition, poor county and state land use decisions were made for financial interest of geothermal companies over the health and safety concerns of residents. This is true from the get go of HGPA planned 1 month open venting, geothermal prospecting in the Wao O Kele Rainforest, and the reopening of a PGV damaged blowout well KS8 that experts said should never have been be reopened. The county allowed that well to be reopened for the financial benefit of PGV and again the people around that plant suffered when the well failed for a 2nd time before being permanently shut in. The list of geothermal horrors is ongoing.

Over the history of geothermal development in Hawaii, the lack of proper regulation and monitoring by the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) and other state and county agencies have been shameful. And the legislature has now compounded the problems by allowing further geothermal exploration and development virtually anywhere. Hawaii is headed toward major upheaval over geothermal expansion that could surpass the hundreds of arrests and legal action it took to stop geothermal industrial development in Hawaii’s last intact lowland rainforest and the seedbed for new lava flows. Hawaiian spiritual beliefs, people’s basic civil rights and the environment are being trashed by geothermal profiteers greed.

Please leave resident relocation funding in place until all geothermal is shut down and Ormat (PGV’s parent company) is relocated back to its home base of Israel where its windfall profits have been going from the rape of Pele and the poisoning of the people and land of Puna for far too long. There are better, safer, and more respectful alternatives than geothermal for our energy needs. Mahalo.

Support  Puna Pono Alliance!

To All Hawai’i Residents, Especially People of Puna, (and lovers of Hawai’i, everywhere!)

A very important fundraiser is happening!
The Puna Pono Alliance will receive all proceeds from this event to be
held at Laakea on May 4th.

Puna Pono alliance is the main organization trying to establish
safeguards, regulation and oversight at the current geothermal plant.
PPA has established working relationships with county coucilors, state
legislatures and activists statewide. THEY HAVE WORKED TO PRESERVE PUNA
INPUT INTO DECISIONS ABOUT GEOTHERMAL IN PUNA. They are an educational
presence at farmers markets, and many other events. They maintain a
robust web site full of geothermal information at: http://punapono.com/

(if you are not able to make it to the fundraiser but would like to donate you can do so here) http://www.punapono.com/index.php/donations

PPA IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SAFETY AND WELL BEING OF THE PEOPLE OF PUNA
RELATIVE TO THE CURRENT PLANT!
PPA is twenty times as important when considering the 20 sites being
looked into for possible future geothermal.

I have been attending PPA meetings for a few months. These Puna
residents are sincere and organized, effective, established, networked
and in need of support. Their bank balance is near zero. Keep these
hardworking volunteers supported.
OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE $4,000.
It’s an ambitious amount!
It would allow PPA to focus on protecting Puna’s future, rather then
more fundraising.
COME! ENJOY! DONATE!

Geothermal Community Meeting

Geothermal update 3/18/13 and Community meeting……..

Aloha

Puna Pono Alliance is hosting a community meeting next Saturday, March 23, beginning at 4pm at the Akebone Theater in Pahoa.

Most of you have heard about the latest accident at Puna Geothermal Venture last Wednesday. PPA has scheduled an informational meeting and will be collecting community accounts about the venting at PGV. Please come and help us spread the word.

HAAS school principle Steve Hirakami will be facilitating the meeting and we have invited Hawaii County Civil Defense chief Darryl Oliveira, who agreed to come and speak to the community. We also have invited the the state Department of Health, Mayor Billy Kenoi, PGV, Harry Kim, Senator Russell Ruderman and Representative Faye Hanohano to hear the communities concerns and hopefully help us to create a more functional plan for the future.

We are asking the Hawaii State Department of Health and Hawaii County Civil Defense to help us prepare forms to better evaluate the impacts on the community. We will be collecting information and ideas from you at the meeting to use in asking for a better monitoring and emergency response.

We also want water testing made available for catchments in the area, the aquifer (Water wells), surface waters including Greenlake, the Hot Pond, and the near shore ocean from Kapoho to Pohoiki.

It is our hope that we will find a way to ensure the community is protected particularly during the next incidents and accidents.  Did you know what to do, or who to call, or where to go if need be? Many people did not, we need to change that.

We are asking DOH and Hawaii County to help us prepare a list and publish it that will have the information people need when there are geothermal accidents or incidents. Most of the people we talked to did not know who to call or have the phone numbers or know how to file an official report to document problems or impacts.

Please come to this meeting and help us as we try to work with the state and county to better protect our community, tell your family, your neighbors and your friends, they can help us now.

Sorry for the short notice, we need to get the information ASAP.

Everyone is welcome but this is a PPA informational meeting not a protest, please be respectful of everyone that comes. I have told them this is not a PR event, we want answers not spin. That will only happen if everyone treats each other with respect. I know some of you are upset, so am I. However we have an organization in PPA that can get more done if we put document our issues, put them on paper, and present them as a community. Letting our frustration get the better of us will not be as effective. Work with us, help us find ways to really make things better. Thank you.

For more information call Barb Cuttance 339-4344

Mahalo to everyone that helped last us Wednesday. The community pulled together and documented this accident pretty well independent of any government agencies. Our experience and organization is starting to pay off. If anyone knows the name of the family that evacuated to the Pahoa Community Center during the incident we would like to talk to them. If you saw the venting, smelled the gases, or had other problems we would like to talk to you.

See you Saturday
