Armistice Day —

Veterans Day!

Celebrate Peace Not War!

In 1919, a year following the end of World War I, the “War to End All War,” Armistice Day was established on Nov. 11 as a celebration of peace and a time to remember the waste of war. In 1954, following the Korean War, the U.S. Congress transformed Armistice Day into Veterans Day and transformed a day to celebrate peace into a day to glorify war and the celebration of those who participate in wars as “heroes.” What lesson does that teach our children — to dream of becoming peacemakers? No, to become a “hero” one goes off to kill or be killed in a future war.

Let’s be clear, Veterans Day, like Armed Forces Day, has less to do about honoring the sacrifices of troops than it does with recruiting the next generation of soldiers to be used as cannon fodder in future wars of empire. Talk of “freedom and democracy” is window dressing to disguise the grab for resources by corporate profiteers, what President, and former General, Dwight David Eisenhower warned about, and called the Military-Industrial Complex.

Preventing nuclear war and climate catastrophe are the two greatest challenges of our time. Today, the US military spends over $800 BILLION annually. It is the largest consumer of oil and the greatest emitter of CO2 on earth contributing to climate chaos. It maintains hundreds of military bases around the planet., an elaborate secret intelligence network that spies on everyone, and a masterful propaganda machine with compliant media. The Military-Industrial Complex fuels fear and hatred creating enemies in order to keep the weapons merchants of death business booming. But at what human, financial, social, planetary, and spiritual costs?

Members of the group Veterans for Peace https://www.veteransforpeace.org/ are working across the U.S. to recover the original purpose of Armistice Day to remember all who died in wars, put an end to all wars, and celebrate peace. Thank you for your service for peace, not war. Together, we say …
