War, War, & More War!  What is it good for?

The Arms Merchants of Death!

America has spent $6.4 trillion on wars since 2001

The report, from Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs at Brown University finds that more than 801,000 people have died in fighting. Millions more wounded and displaced.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. viewed military spending as an enemy of the poor.

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” MLK

In a now famous April 1967 speech at Riverside Church in New York City, the civil rights leader publicly denounced American involvement in Indochina.

After King’s Riverside speech against the US war in Vietnam 168 newspapers denounced him the next day. Johnson ended his formal relationship with King. “What is that goddamned nigger preacher doing to me?” Johnson reportedly remarked after the Riverside speech. “We gave him the Civil Rights Act of 1964, we gave him the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we gave him the war on poverty. What more does he want?”

In 1968, King launched the Poor People’s Campaign, aimed at providing good jobs, housing, and a decent standard of living to all Americans. King proposed a massive summer tent encampment in Washington, D.C. to demand action on poverty. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 during a campaign to organize sanitation workers in Tennessee, before he was able to set up the encampment.

King’s ongoing campaign against racism, coming out strong against the US war in Indochina and planning a massive nonviolent civil disobedience campaign for the summer of 1968 in Washington. D.C. on economic injustice sealed his fate. Let us carry on King’s vision of nonviolence against racism, war, and injustice, and for peace, justice, and protecting the planet.
