Today in the U.S. millions have been protesting in the streets against systematic racism saying “Black Lives Matter.”   There is no question there has been escalating violence in the streets of America since George Floyd was killed by police.  Both police and protesters share responsibility.  But the vast majority of protests against police killings, calling for police reform have been peaceful.

Donald Trump is fueling the flames of violence.  His words and actions are meant to divide and scare people.  He is using “Law & Order” to divert attention away from his responsibility for the growing Covid pandemic death count, now over 185.000 Americans and the worst economic crisis since the great depression.

Donald Trump is behind in presidential poles. Desperate people do desperate things!  The use of Agent Provocateurs to instigate violence and cause fear and repression in social movements has a long history. (Simply Google “History of Agent Provocateurs in the U.S. to learn more.) It’s been used against labor unions, the American Indian, civil rights, and anti-war movements, etc.

An agent provocateur (French for “inciting agent”) is a person who commits or who acts to entice another person to commit an illegal or rash act so as to ruin the reputation or entice legal action against the target or a group they belong to. Agent provocateurs may be police officers or secret government agents. Provocateurs often try to incite violence to foster public disdain and to serve as a pretext for police repression. In the United States, the COINTELPRO program of the Federal Bureau of Investigation included FBI agents posing as political activists to disrupt the activities of political groups.

Martin Luther King taught the importance of principled nonviolent action where the means used are in line with the end sought.  If we want a nation and world of justice and peace, it is critical that we use means that are peaceful and justice.  In such a movement there is no room for violence and hate.  So as we go forward let nonviolence be our guiding light.  Let us treat all people with respect, even those who strongly disagree with us.  The arc of the moral universe does bend toward justice.  No lie can live forever.

If all else fails – Trump May Even Start Another War to Try and Hold on to Power!

But keep your eyes on the prize — peace and nonviolence!

1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject war as a solution. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, etc.
5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.
