Stop Glorifying War!

Honor Peacemakers Worldwide!

The peace sign was created 2/21/58 by British graphic designer and Christian pacifist Gerald Holtom. Holtom was tasked with creating the banners and signs for a nuclear disarmament march in London, and he wanted a visual that would stick in the public’s mind. The design is, in part, modeled after naval semaphore flags that sailors use to communicate. Holtom combined the codes for “N” (two flags angled down at a 45 degrees) for “nuclear” and “D” (one flag pointed straight up and one flag pointed straight down) for “disarmament.”

The U.S. is a nation that glorifies and promotes a culture of war, not a culture of peace. Author Michael D. Knox puts it this way:The U.S. war culture is insidious. It has invaded not only our government, but our schools, police, universities, healthcare institutions, workplaces, sports, concerts, places of worship, industry, transportation, stores, and media — all aspects of our lives and culture. It is hard to attend a public event or use a public service without being confronted by the symbols of the military state.” This includes military bomber flyovers at the Superbowl and fighter jet flyover tributes nationwide to Covid 19 health care workers. We all would be a lot better off if the money spent on these military public relations events had been spent on needed health care supplies. When politicians tell us to “support the troops,” they are really telling us to support US endless wars of conquest for corporate interests. Don’t buy it.  It’s time to say Enough! No More Wars. It’s time to honor the peacemakers and work for justice, and a living planet for future generations.
