Amid Global Climate Catastrophe!

     Weapons, weapons, and more weapons are not the way to world peace. More weapons are the path to global destruction from nuclear war if human civilization is not destroyed first by climate catastrophe.

     The US keeps pumping Billions of dollars of more powerful weapons into Ukraine for its proxy war with Russia. It is taking provocative actions by sailing US warships in the Taiwan strait, and even doing joint US-South Korea “decapitation drills,” to assassinate DPRK (North Korea) leader Kim Jong Un. (thedailybeast.com, Aug. 19). All of these actions are extremely dangerous. The US history of CIA assassinations and more recent hi-tech assassinations by Reaper drones must be making Kim Jong Un and other world leaders very nervous. Reaper assassin drones are now based at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station on Oahu, and train at the Pohakuloa military base on Hawaii Island.

    The US mass media, with its military and intelligence community experts, keep beating the drums of war for the US arms merchants, and the war-based economy of the US global empire. This has got to end. The US spends more on the military, $813 billion for fiscal year 2023, than the next nine countries, including China and Russia, combined. What is needed is a cooperative transition to a global economy of peace. Specifically in Ukraine, what is needed is not more weapons, but a ceasefire, and diplomatic efforts toward a negotiated settlement agreeable to all parties.

WHAT ABOUT STOPPING MILITARY SPECIAL OPS ARMED TRAINING IN HAWAII PARKS, BEACHES, AND NEAR SHORE WATERS?

Whidbey Environmental Action Network (WEAN):

WEAN, an organization with 30 years of accomplishments for the natural environment, won a court case in April 2022 in Thurston County Superior Court, which found that Washington’s State Parks and Recreation Commission had been “arbitrary and capricious” in granting the United States Navy use of state parks for military training. Their permission to do so was vacated in an unusual and lengthy ruling from the bench. The case had been filed by WEAN with the support of the Not in Our Parks Coalition to challenge the Commission’s approval, given in 2021, for its staff to proceed with permitting the Navy’s plans for war training in state parks.

The public had first learned that the U.S. Navy was using state parks for war rehearsals in 2016 from a report at Truthout.org. There followed years of research, organizing, education, and mobilizing of the public by WEAN and its friends and allies, as well as years of lobbying pressure by the U.S. Navy, which flew in numerous experts from Washington, D.C., California, and Hawaii. While the Navy can be expected to keep pushing, WEAN won its court case on all counts, having persuaded the court that unannounced warlike actions by armed troops in public parks was damaging to the public and the parks.

WEAN impressed people for years with its dedicated efforts to expose what was being done and to put a stop to it, building a case against the environmental destruction of war exercises, the danger to the public, and the harm to resident war veterans suffering PTSD. The state parks are locations for weddings, for the spreading of ashes following funerals, and for seeking quiet and solace.

The Navy’s presence in the Puget Sound region is less than positive. On the one hand, they tried (and will likely try again) to commandeer State Parks for training in how to spy on park visitors. On the other hand, they fly jets so loud that the state’s flagship park, Deception Pass, becomes impossible to visit because jets are screaming overhead. While WEAN took on the spying in state parks, another group, Sound Defense Alliance, addressed the Navy’s making life untenable.

A small number of people on a small island are having an impact on Washington State and developing a model to be emulated elsewhere. World BEYOND War is very pleased to honor them and encourages everyone to hear their story, and ask them questions, on September 5.

The Military’s Role in Human Extinction!

The US Military is the largest consumer of oil and the greatest emitter of CO2 on the planet. Yet, it does not report its climate change emissions to any national or international body, thanks to US arm-twisting during the 1997 negotiations of the first international accord to limit global warming emissions, the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change.

Honoring Yugo “Pluto” Okubo

A WWII Varsity Victory Volunteer!

From Hero to Un-American in less than 5 years!

     The HTH article of Aug. 21, 2022, about the 100^th Infantry Battalion military training at Pohakuloa, prompted me to write this letter. The military is trying to get a State lease renewal of 23,000 acres at Pohakuloa to bomb conservation land, so it’s doing a lot of PR work.

     A hero and mentor of mine is the late Yugo Okubo, of the original 100^th Battalion of the 442^nd Infantry Regiment who fought in WWII. Yugo was a freshman at UH Manoa who dropped out of school following the bombing of Pearl Harbor to enlist in the US Army. Like many others, it was a way of trying to prove he was “An American.” Yugo was sent behind German lines in a glider. Yugo said his claim to fame was going from hero to un-American in less than 5 years. Following the war Yugo was jailed as an “Un-American” –one of the “Hawaii 39” along with Yasu Arakaki and others for union organizing under the McCarthy era anti-communist witch hunts. Yugo was then working as a printer for The Honolulu Record newspaper. Journalists Beware! You too could end up like Yugo and Julian Assange if you don’t do PR work and instead begin to criticize the US Empire’s war machine.

     In 1981, Yugo heard from his sister, Setsu, that I was starting an all-volunteer peace farm – Malu ‘Aina, in Kurtistown and he came to help. I had known Setsu who taught many years at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu but originally taught school in Kurtistown. Setsu came to visit and introduced us to many long-time Kurtistown residents.

I learned a lot from Yugo in the 7 years he lived at Malu ‘Aina. I learned about Hawaii’s history and the illegal overthrow and occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the US. I learned about racism, militarism, and economic injustice. Yugo’s life was a strong message: Don’t glorify war! War is not the answer. Live a life of solidarity with the least among us. Redirect military funding to meet human needs. Yugo was a committed peace activist who joined in protests at Hilo Harbor against visiting nuclear warships and at Pohakuloa to Stop the Bombing and return the land to the Hawaiian people. There is a photo of Yugo on our Malu Aina kitchen wall, behind where he sat at the kitchen table. It is Yugo standing with a sign on the Hilo docks protesting a visiting nuclear warship. His homemade sign says “Nuclear Never! Hawaii Forever!” And behind Yugo are several stocks of bananas we took as goodwill gifts from our farm to the ship’s crew. We wanted to show that it was not the sailors who we opposed but the nuclear warships coming in violation of Hawaii County’s historic Nuclear-Free zone law, the first nuclear-free law passed by any municipality in the US in 1981.

     Yugo died peacefully in his sleep of heart failure in 1988. Yugo –we will never forget you! Mahalo for your service! I urge others to join the Yugo Okubo “One-Puka-Puka” peace ohana. No More bombing and shelling of Hawaii or anywhere! No More War!
