Congresswoman Mazie Hirono Protested for Supporting Wars!
U.S. Representative (Hawaii District 2), Mazie Hirono, was taken to task at UH Hilo over the escalating wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. on Tuesday, January 5, 2010. In a hand delivered letter to Rep. Hirono, peace activist Jim Albertini said: “Your voice has been much to weak for peace against the illegal wars of aggression in Iraq, Afghanistan, now Pakistan, and broadening to other countries.”
Albertini said, “It’s long past time to cut off the war funds and refuse to fund Obama’s expanding war surge of 30,000 plus troops which translates into $30-$40 billion additional dollars for illegal war and occupation.”
The U.S. spends trillions for war and corporate/banker bailouts while neglecting the poor, those losing their homes, already homeless, and the unemployed. With unemployment in double digits, what’s needed is a massive jobs program, guaranteeing every person a job at a livable wage. Cut the military budget and raise taxes on the surplus income (more than $1 million) of the wealthy to pay for the jobs program and a government single-payer health care plan for all.
The record of Congress in funding the wars under Bush and now Obama and catering to Wall Street Bankers, insurance companies, and other corporate fat cats, at the expense of common people, is a downright DISGRACE.
Hirono was reminded that U.S. military spending tops what all 50 State governments combined spend for health, education, welfare, and safety.
The more innocent people the U.S. kills around the world, whether its by occupying troops, missiles, or drone assassin pilotless aircraft, the more hatred builds toward the U.S. The cycle of violence must be broken. Otherwise, as Gandhi said, “An eye-for-an-eye will make the whole world blind.”
More war is not the answer. The U.S. empire, with its 1,000 military bases in the U.S. and another 800 bases globally, must end its imperial policies of global control. Solutions will be found by seeking peace through justice in Hawaii and around the world. This is what we continue to say in every one of our 434 weekly leaflets since September12, 2001. (See below).
