US military activity (including RIMPAC) in Hawai’i harms the environment

Climate & Environment

US military activity in Hawai’i harms the environment and erodes Native sovereignty

The military’s abuse of Hawai’i’s land and sea and its impact on climate change is part of the ongoing oppression of Native Hawaiians
75% of the country’s Superfund sites—toxic, contaminated land unfit for human living—are former military bases. Military and war-making chemicals, like explosives, perchlorate, benzene, and other chemical weapons, seep into the soil and groundwater systems.

US Military: Greatest Polluter on the Planet

Tuesday, July 26th, 2022

           US Military:                                                    Greatest Polluter on

             the Planet!

The US Military is the largest consumer of oil and emitter of CO2 on earth, contributing to climate catastrophe and the increasing danger of nuclear annihilation. Here in Hawaii, we can see the destructive effects of US militarism firsthand. The Navy’s contamination of Oahu’s drinking water wells with jet fuel from Red Hill storage tanks is but the latest example. The Navy destroyed the freshwater aquifer by bombing on the island of Kaho’olawe. The Navy dumped barge loads of munitions in waters off several islands.  The Navy also dumped thousands of 55-gallon drums of radioactive waste to the ocean floor off Oahu’s southern shores. Millions of gallons of radioactive liquid waste and other toxins have been discharged into Pearl Harbor. Depleted Uranium (DU) radiation weapons have been fired at Schofield Barracks in central Oahu, Pohakuloa on Hawaii Island, and likely at Makua Valley on Oahu’s leeward side. Dating back decades, there have been leaked reports of radiation released at military sites on Oahu from accidents involving nuclear weapons. There have even been reports of sub-kiloton nuclear weapons being exploded at Pohakuloa in the 1950s and early 60s, but everything regarding nuclear weapons is classified as “secret.” The military neither confirms nor denies the presence of nuclear weapons anywhere. End of story.

August 4th marks the end of RIMPAC 2022 deadly war games involving 26 countries, 25,000 military personnel, 170 aircraft, and more than 40 ships and submarines bombing and shelling Hawaii, sinking ships in Hawaiian waters, killing marine life, and conducting amphibious shoreline landings on several islands. ENOUGH! No More RIMPAC. RIMPAC Never Again!  Where are the voices of elected officials?

Song: Ballad of Pearl Harbor – Matthew 7:6 by Jim Albertini, 1985

https://youtu.be/Ux_XJf7BgB8

Do not give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before swine. They will trample them under foot at best, perhaps even tear you to shreds. Matthew 7:6

We showered you with our pearls, but you wanted even more. You took away our Mother Pearl, raped, plundered, and trampled her. We were blinded by your breath of fire. You made us very proud. We worshiped you not knowing, we were losing our souls.

(Chorus) Take back the pearl for the people, let Mother Pearl shine again, and give life back to the land, and welcome all of her rainbow children that bridge the ocean of peace.)

You poisoned the waters and destroyed the fishponds. You killed the fish and the oysters and desecrated holy lands, You put up fences and iron gates. You brought in disease and waves of death. (Repeat chorus)

We have been fools but our eyes are now opening. No longer will we worship you or follow in your ways. Depart from us with your poisoned quills and deadly unhatched eggs. (Repeat chorus and repeat: that bridge the ocean of peace.)

Article by Graham Ellis, about Jim Albertini and Malu Aina

Saturday, July 23rd, 2022
Below is a link to an article by an old friend, Graham Ellis, about Malu Aina and me. Probably a lot more than you ever wanted to know about me. I appreciate his storytelling skills and kind words.
Graham Ellis is a British citizen deported a couple of years ago by Homeland security for his activism. He had been a resident of Hawaii for 40 years or more — a former school principal, but his real passion was teaching kids juggling, stilt walking, unicycling, and other circus skills.
