Take a Stand for Peace Now!

There will be NO Winners in a Nuclear War!

To All Military People in the World’s 9 Nuclear Rogue States: The US, Russia, China, Great Britain, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel –

Refuse Orders to Launch Nuclear Weapons!

Nuclear Weapons Are NOW Illegal Under International Law! United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force on Jan. 22, 2021. The Nuremberg principles and the Geneva Conventions also reinforce the obligation to disobey illegal orders.

We live in a time of unprecedented danger. Today, the world is on hair-trigger alert with the escalating war between the US and NATO with Russia in Ukraine, and increasing tensions between the US and China.

Vasily Arkhipov– World Hero for Peace! Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov was a Soviet Naval officer who refused to launch a nuclear torpedo against US forces in 1962, thereby preventing the Cuban missile crisis from escalating into nuclear war. Jan. 30th would have been his 97th birthday. He died in 1998. Wikipedia Jan. 30th also marks the 75 anniversary of the assassination of Mohandas Gandli, another World Hero for Peace and nonviolence, who continues to inspire many nonviolent activists around the world, despite the cost of his life.

Today, we need more World Heroes for Peace – people who will refuse to launch nuclear weapons; people who will stand up for peace now! We need people who will put the common good of humanity before the criminal actions of their own government and corporate interests who want to profit off of war, even at the cost of destroying human civilization and the ecosystem of the planet. All of us have a responsibility to speak up and stand up, and to sound the alarm to prevent nuclear war and climate disasters.

Peace is a Victory for ALL!

1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject violence & war as solutions. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination: anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, anti-Black, anti-Asian, anti-Russian,
anti-LGBTQ, etc.  5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.

Doomsday Clock moves closer to Midnight hour

Physicians For Social Responsibility (PSR) issues a statement on the Doomsday Clock of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists being moved closer to the Midnight hour

PSR Statement on the 2023 Doomsday Clock Announcement

Doomsday Clock at 90 seconds to midnight

Today, the Doomsday Clock stands at 90 seconds to midnight. The United States’ inaction and the collective failure of the global North to abolish nuclear weapons or adequately address climate change has led us to this moment. This announcement by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moving the Clock closer to midnight reminds us that we cannot prepare for nuclear war, we must prevent it.

Scientific studies demonstrate that a small fraction of the world’s nuclear arsenals—if detonated on cities—would have planetary impacts on the climate, agriculture and global health. The Doomsday Clock is a stark reminder that we must interrupt our denial and confront reality. It is supremely unhealthy to continue to maintain and modernize a vast nuclear arsenal that will lead to catastrophic global famine if ever unleashed.

PSR’s prescription: the United States must begin the process of pursuing a verifiable agreement among all nuclear-armed countries to totally eliminate their nuclear arsenals in compliance with international law.

Even without a war, the mere production and maintenance of nuclear weapons causes devastating illness and environmental pollution. The impacts are most often felt by women and children, who are disproportionately impacted by radiation exposure, and Black, brown, and Indigenous communities that are treated as dumping grounds for radioactive pollution.

As noted in the Bulletin’s announcement today, climate change is among the greatest health threats facing humanity in the 21st century. While worldwide patterns of temperature, precipitation and weather events change, the delicate balance of climate and life is disrupted, with serious impacts on food and agriculture, water sources, and health. People of color, and poor and working class communities will continue to face the worst harms of climate change, nuclear testing and proliferation unless we demand change.

The Doomsday Clock is warning us of the peril if we continue along the current path. If we wish to turn the clock back, we must begin right now.
