70th Anniversary of Bravo Nuclear Bomb Test
Wednesday, February 28th, 2024Prevent Nuclear War —
Abolish Nuclear Weapons!
March 1st Remembering Bikini,
Marshall Islands
March 1st is known as Bikini Day and Nuclear-Free and Independent Pacific Day. On March 1, 1954, the U.S. exploded a 10-megaton (10 million tons of dynamite equivalent) hydrogen bomb code-named Bravo on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. March 1, 2024, marks the 70th anniversary of the Bikini Nuclear explosion. Overall, hundreds of nuclear weapons have been tested in the Pacific by the U.S. Britain, and France.
The March 1st (monthly 1st working day of the month at 11:45 AM) nuclear attack warning siren test is a reminder that we need to abolish all nuclear weapons before they abolish us. It is still important to stand in opposition to nuclear weapons and war in solidarity with people all around the Pacific and the world. There is no defense against nuclear weapons. The only shelter is peace and the elimination of nuclear weapons worldwide.

Pass the word. We can support the reso but urge adding Immediate and Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza, no more military aid to Israel, Stop the Genocide in Gaza. etc. The existing reso is just very bland – general, no mention of Gaza.

Ceasefire in Gaza and Pohakuloa!
Tuesday, February 27th, 2024Ceasefire in Gaza Now!
Immediate & Permanent!
Stop the Gaza
Genocide!
Join the weekly Hilo Peace Vigil every Friday from 3:30 to 5 PM at the downtown Hilo Post Office/Federal Building on Waianuenue Ave.
Call County, State, and Federal elected officials for 1. An immediate and permanent Ceasefire in Gaza; 2. End all US military aid to Israel; 3. Terminate the Hawaii/Israel Strategic partnership signed in Oct. 2022; 4. Stop US Bombing of Yemen, etc.
Call for 1. An immediate end to all bombing and live fire at the military 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Toxic Area (PTA) in the center of Hawaii Island. PTA is contaminated by a wide range of military toxins, including Depleted Uranium (DU) radiation from 75 years of bombing and shelling. These tiny DU oxide particles can be carried long distances in the wind and easily inhaled, causing various cancers, birth defects, and genetic damage. 2. Cancel, not renew, the 23,000 acres of State leased conservation zone land for bombing at PTA. 3. Revoke the presidential executive order signed in 1964 that seized 84,000 acres of Hawaiian crown and government lands at Pohakuloa at zero cost for bombing, 4. Make the military clean up its toxic mess and return the lands to the Hawaiian people.
Bombing a dry, windy area like Pohakuloa is a Lahaina fire in the making! Many fires have been started, and large areas burned, by bombing and shelling at PTA. The extremes of climate change are only adding to the risk of further disasters.
Peace organizing meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at the Kea’au Community Center from 6 – 8 PM and available by Zoom.

Nonviolence – Kapu Aloha!
Monday, February 26th, 2024Nonviolence – Kapu Aloha!
In all of our efforts for justice, peace, and aloha ‘aina, the means that we use must be in line with the ends that we seek. This is a firm principle of nonviolence in the tradition of Gandhi and Martin Luther King. If we want peace, then peace, not violence, including inflicting physical harm to ourselves, must be the path to peace. We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Aaron Bushnell and we pray for peace in Gaza, Ukraine, and the entire world. May Aaron forever Rest in Peace!
Remembering Aaron Bushnell! 1999 – 2024
“After Setting Himself on Fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C,, US Airman Aaron Bushnell Dies Declaring ‘Free Palestine.’
(from an article by Brett Wilkins in Common Dreams Feb. 26, 2024) https://www.commondreams.org/news/aaron-bushnell? Also, see articles by Ann Wright and Caitlin Johnstone https://consortiumnews.com/2024/02/26/
“Many of us like to ask ourselves, ‘What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?’ The answer is, you’re doing it.”
“My name is Aaron Bushnell, I am an active-duty member of the United States Air Force, and I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all.”
“That’s how the 25-year-old introduced himself—and bade farewell—to the world in a livestream video of his Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25, 2024) walk to the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. Arriving outside the front gate, Bushnell set down his phone, took eight paces, turned to face the camera, doused himself in an unknown accelerant, donned his service cap, and set himself alight. He repeatedly screamed “Free Palestine” as he burned.
“More than 100,000 Palestinians—mostly women and children—have been killed or wounded by Israeli bombs and bullets since the October 7 attacks on Israel. Around 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been forcibly displaced, and at least hundreds of thousands of Gazans are on the brink of starvation.
“The U.S. government backs Israel with nearly $4 billion in annual military aid and diplomatic support including three vetoes of United Nations Security Council cease-fire resolutions. The Biden administration is seeking an additional $14.3 billion in armed assistance for Israel, and has twice sidestepped Congress to fast-track emergency military aid.”
Peace, Not More Bombs & Killing in Gaza, Ukraine, etc.!
1 . Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject violence & war as solutions. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination: anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, anti-Black, anti-Asian, anti-Russian, anti-LGBTQ, etc. 5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.
