PS  Danny Li and I are regulars at the Friday Hilo Peace Vigil.  Since this Friday we are likely to be tied up in court till at least 4:30PM if any of you have some time, even 10-15 min, please drop by the Hilo Peace Vigil to participate from 3:30-5PM.  Each week for going on 19 years we stand in the spirit of aloha adhering to the principles of nonviolence.  If hostility is directed at us, we return aloha, and not engage with the hostility which is rare.  There is a lot of support from people passing by on foot and in vehicles. Mahalo for joining the peace vigil whenever you can.

Inside the Two Minute Doomsday Warning Jan. 31, 2020 Hilo Peace Vigil leaflet

     2020 Doomsday Clock

             clock

Inside the two minute warning

On January 23, 2020, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, whose Board of Sponsors includes 13 Nobel Laureates moved the hands of its famous Doomsday Clock to  100 seconds to midnight.  It’s the  closest the hands have ever been to Doomsday since the clock was created in 1947.

The Bulletin says “humanity continues to face two simultaneous existential dangers—nuclear war and climate change—that are compounded by a threat multiplier, cyber-enabled information warfare, that undercuts society’s ability to respond. The international security situation is dire, not just because these threats exist, but because world leaders have allowed the international political infrastructure for managing them to erode.

“In the nuclear realm, national leaders have ended or undermined several major arms control treaties and negotiations during the last year, creating an environment conducive to a renewed nuclear arms race, to the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and to lowered barriers to nuclear war. Political conflicts regarding nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea remain unresolved and are, if anything, worsening. US-Russia cooperation on arms control and disarmament is all but nonexistent.

“Public awareness of the climate crisis grew over the course of 2019, largely because of mass protests by young people around the world. Just the same, governmental action on climate change still falls far short of meeting the challenge at hand. At UN climate meetings last year, national delegates made fine speeches but put forward few concrete plans to further limit the carbon dioxide emissions that are disrupting Earth’s climate. This limited political response came during a year when the effects of manmade climate change were manifested by one of the warmest years on record, extensive wildfires, and quicker-than-expected melting of glacial ice. .. “

Remove Trump But Do More Jan. 24, 2020 Hilo Peace Vigil leaflet

REMOVE TRUMP

BUT DO MORE!

This week marked the U.S. national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the apostle of nonviolence.   It also marked the beginning of the Impeachment trial to remove Donald Trump as President, for committing high crimes. What a contrast!

King talked about, lived, and gave his life to confront what he called the giant triplets of evil – Racism, Capitalism, and Militarism, and Donald Trump champions all three.

Given the make up of the Republican controlled Senate, the likelihood of removing Trump appears in doubt. But as King often said “No lie can live forever.” “The arc of the moral universe bends toward justice.” Trump or no Trump, Democrat or Republican in power, an important question is where do we stand day-to-day in life’s journey? Either we are an activist or an inactivist. Albert Einstein said: “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” So please do something!

Our planet is facing two existential (life ending) threats: climate catastrophe and nuclear war that demand our immediate attention! Future generations are depending on the actions we take today. We who live on an island should know the importance of living in balance with nature, the importance of aloha aina, and what we do — mauka to makai (mountain to the sea). One thing affects the other. Everything is connected.

We need to restore balance in Hawaii and on the planet to survive. It begins with controlling corporate greed, taking care of the land, air, fresh water, and the sea, and all the people, plants and animals as ohana. But there is more to do.  Hawaii has become one of the most militarized places on earth, including the U.S. command center and training ground for nuclear war?  Let us carry forward Dr. King’s vision. Let us find ways to address the root causes of the problems destroying Hawaii and our world – the giant triplets of evil –Racism, Capitalism and Militarism.

Stand Firm in Nonviolence – KAPU ALOHA!

1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject war as a solution. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, etc.
5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.
