Increasing Risk of Nuclear War Aug. 28, 2020 Hilo Peace Vigil leaflet

END ALL WARS!

This month, August 2020, marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII.

The Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing.”

General and future US President Dwight David Eisenhower on the Atomic bombs dropped by the U.S. on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

war

Tens of millions died in World War II. Millions have died in wars since, many of which are ongoing. An issue that needs more public attention is the increasing risk of nuclear war that could result in the deaths of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions, of people worldwide and the end of civilization as we know it. A significant factor contributing to the increasing risk of nuclear war is the recent U.S. deployment of new, relatively small “usable” nuclear weapons. This makes the unthinkable, not only thinkable, but doable by deluded people who think there can be winners in a nuclear war.

An urgent task before us is to work for an immediate “No First Use of Nuclear Weapons” and the total elimination of nuclear weapons everywhere. Currently 9 countries have nuclear weapons. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/global-appeal-to-nine-nuclear-governments

The agenda for urgent action is growing: getting the global Covid pandemic under control, saving the planet from climate catastrophe, helping working people through an economic crisis like nothing seen since the Great Depression. and addressing systematic racism in the struggle for racial justice, etc. This calls for redirecting the Trillions of dollars currently spent on war to human needs. It’s all about protecting the common good and saving lives.

If this is Radical, then call me a Radical!

Trump — More Desperate, Dangerous,

& Authoritarian!

How bad can things get? We are living in unprecedented times. We are in in the midst of a global pandemic, the worst in 100 years. The US with 4% of the world’s population has 25% of the world’s Covid cases with the death toll mounting. In addition, working people and small businesses are facing an economic crisis like nothing seen since the Great Depression, while the wealth of Billionaires soars. On top of all this are the growing visible effects of planet climate catastrophe, deadly blatant systematic racism, and escalating US tensions risking war with China, etc. War today, either through accident or design, could result in global nuclear destruction and the end to civilization as we know it.

In a few months, amid the pandemic, elections will be held. In the interest of protecting the public health, it seems common sense to provide mail in voting so people do not have to leave their homes and risk their lives to vote. Trump has been making baseless mail fraud allegations. It appears to be part of a clear attempt to suppress the vote. Trump seems to realize that the fewer people who vote, the better his chances of winning. There is nothing new about suppressing the vote in minority areas, providing fewer poling places and voting booths, etc. resulting in long lines and hours of waiting. But sabotaging the Post Office vote by mail in the midst of a pandemic appears unprecedented. Trump did not mince words on his intent. He made clear he’s blocking postal cash to stop mail in votes. It’s been reported widely in the media on 8/13/20.

There now appears to be major push back in support of voting by mail and funding the Post Office, but damage may have already been done. Mail processing machines and mail drop boxes have reportedly been removed in many places. Keep pushing for justice, peace and a livable planet.

Beware of More Coming Surprises to Hold on to Power!

Who would have thought the need to defend the Post Office?

1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject war as a solution. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, etc.
5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.

Hawaii is #1 Covid Hot Spot

covid

Hawaii now has the highest Covid 19 infection and virus reproduction rate in the U.S. We need to act responsibly to help protect one another.

Please Wear a Mask! Practice Social Distancing! Wash hands frequently!

Keep everyone, including teachers, students, and kupuna safe!

Hawaii needs more, better, and quicker, low cost testing.

And more contact tracers too!

Governor Ige and all government officials need to put Public Health ahead of the Tourist industry and other economic interests. People Before Profits!

These are unprecedented times. There is no escape under sail, plane, etc. anywhere these days on this tiny planet.  Climate catastrophe and nuclear weapons ability to destroy the whole world have been trying to tell us this for a long time.  Now Covid 19 too. Sadly, we haven’t been listening and taking the necessary actions together for the common good.  The urgency is now! As long as we are still breathing, we can contribute something in this effort for a better world. Let’s do it!
