Daniel Ellsberg

an American hero for the ages!

Daniel Ellsberg, the legendary peace activist, died on June 16, 2023, from pancreatic cancer at the age of 92 surrounded by his family in California. For more than 50 years until his last breath, he worked to help prevent nuclear war and save the world.

In 1971 at the risk of spending the rest of his life in prison, he released to the NY Times and the Washington Post what became known as the Pentagon Papers exposing the US lies about the Vietnam War.  His courageous action helped to end the war. From that day forward until his very last breath he dedicated his life to preventing global nuclear destruction. His books “Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers” (2002), and “The Doomsday Machine – Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner” (2017) are classics for all who want to see a livable world for future generations.

Dan transformed his life from a nuclear war planner to a nonviolent activist for justice and peace. He was deeply influenced by the lives of Martin Luther King, the civil rights movement, Mohandas Gandhi, and the peace movement to stop the Vietnam War.

There are some amazing interviews with Dan and articles in the last months of his life when he was aware of his terminal cancer discovered in Feb. 2023, In one final interview, Dan said “I choose to act as if it makes a difference. And it’s just a choice. I can’t defend that. It’s just a better way to live. It’s the way I choose to live. We can work to prevent the cataclysm…  On Taiwan – It’s outrageous. We are risking everything over the issue of the control of Taiwan. When I say risking everything, I mean we are risking all-out nuclear war.”

Dan has now passed the torch of peace to us. Together, let us carry it forward. Never give up.! Links to interviews and articles on the prophetic life of Dan Ellsberg’s are posted on www.malu-aina.org
