DLNR Board

Aloha kakou,

Instead of granting environmental exemptions for geothermal exploration, OEQC and DLNR should be requiring that a comprehensive environmental health evaluation study within a 10 mile radius of the existing PGV geothermal plant be completed prior to any further geothermal exploration drilling. The testimony at public hearings of health impacts have been a chilling indictment of government and industry’s complete failure to protect public health.  In addition to health impacts, a study on the impacts of geothermal drilling to Native Hawaiian cultural and religious beliefs should also be conducted.  People give lip service to respecting Hawaiian spiritual beliefs, but where is the evidence of a genuine study that the impacts are being seriously investigated and addressed.
Finally, government should be requiring proper bonding/insurance of geothermal drilling companies to cover their admitted worst case scenario in the event of a major earthquake: a several mile permanent evacuation zone surrounding each and every drill site.  The more drill sites, the greater the cost/liability.  What are the odds of such an event?  The answer is FUKUSHIMA!

Civilization on the Brink!

APPEAL OF HASHIZUME BUN,

A-BOMB SURVIVOR OF HIROSHIMA,

 Following Fukushima N-Plant Disaster

(for full story see http://ameblo.jp/hibakushaglobal/entry-10902685850.html)

TO THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN AND THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD

Time is of the essence. We must work together to halt the nuclear power plants now in operation. People of the world, join hands and speak out to stop the construction of any additional nuclear power plants, speak out to shut down every nuclear power plant on earth.

As an A-bomb survivor, I have long been opposed to nuclear energy in Japan and internationally. This is because I have feared not only nuclear bombs, but also the possibility that one day nuclear energy would destroy all life on the planet…

Human beings are not the only living things. Is it not arrogance for human beings to sacrifice other living things simply for our own benefit? Would it not be wiser for human beings to seek harmony with nature? Humanity in the 20th and 21st centuries is offered only a moment in the long history of our species. That brief moment has been bequeathed by our ancestors, which we, in turn, bequeath to our descendants.

Like the A-bomb survivors, and the sufferers of nuclear tests and nuclear power plant accidents, the victims of the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant will face suffering throughout their lives. The people displaced by the multiple disasters in eastern Japan are braving difficult days in shelters. But even amid such conditions, the children retain their innocence and hope and I am moved and find hope in them…

Radiation respects no border. To save our children, the future of our species, I call on the people of Japan, and the people of the world, to stand together and oppose the continuation of nuclear energy.

Fukushima reactor No. 4 vulnerable to catastrophic collapse; could unleash 85 times Cesium-137 radiation of Chernobyl; human civilization on the brink!http://www.naturalnews.com/035789_Fukushima_Cesium-137_Plume-Gate.html

Please buy a $10 ticket to Ohana Ho’opakele’s Ho’olaulea May 26

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Aloha kakou,

Please purchase a $10 ticket to ‘Ohana Ho’opakele’s Ho’olaulea on Saturday, May 26th from 10AM – 5PM at Maku’u Farmers Market.  This is a benefit for ‘Ohana Ho’opakele, a non-profit organization, to build a model Pu’uhonua as an alternative to prison.  A ticket includes food and great entertainment.  There will be meat and vegetarian stew and rice.  Music includes Keli’i “Skippy” Ioane, Kaliko Guys, Diana Aki, Ben Kaili & Friends, George and Keoki Kahumoku, Damon Williams, Terri Napeahi with Howard Pe`a, and more.

The Hawaii State Legislature just passed a bill for a Pu’uhonua/Wellness Center which is now before the Governor for signing. (See below.) We’ll be explaining more about the Pu’uhonua at the Ho’olaulea and we hope you will help in this important effort.  I’ll be glad to mail tickets to you.  Send a check (made out to Ohana Ho’opakele)  to my address below.  Or you can purchase tickets at Papa Mu Gallery at the Prince Kuhio Plaza.  I’ll also have them at our Friday Peace Vigil 3:30-5PM at Hilo’s downtown Post Office.
A limited amount of tickets will be available at the gate but we want to sell advanced tickets to get a good estimate for food preparations.
You can also call me at 966-7622, or call Uncle Sam at 937-7193 or Ron at 345-9688, and Papa Mu Gallery 959-1101 for tickets.
Please help pass the word about this event and help sell tickets. We can also use help distributing flyers.

Mahalo for your support and solidarity for justice and peace.
Jim

HB 2848 SD2 – PU`UHONUA/WELLNESS CENTER

http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2012/bills/HB2848_CD1_.pdf

Requires Department of Public Safety to plan for a model wellness center that employs native Hawaiian cultural practices on state land (PSD, in cooperation with `Ohana Ho`opakele and other restorative justice groups is directed to create a plan for a pu`uhonua on state land with the assistance of the Public Lands Development Corporation (PLDC), provided that Kulani gets first preference) and to submit a report to the legislature prior to the 2013 legislative session; creates a work release pilot program on the Big Island to allow certain incarcerated individuals to work on projects that benefit the local community and the State; repeals pilot program on June 30, 2015.

Turn Around: It’s Now or Never!

Four Paths to Near –

Term

Human Extinction

  1. War: In an age of nuclear weapons, the world is just a few pushed buttons away from escalating out of control total annihilation. The widespread use of Depleted uranium (DU) and the nuclear weapon/power fuel cycle, has already resulted in widespread global radiation contamination.

Guy McPherson, professor emeritus of natural resources and the environment at the University of Arizona, lists three additional paths to near-term human extinction. See complete article at http://transitionvoice.com/2011/11/three-paths-to-near-term-human-extinction/

  1. Climate Change: The earth is getting hotter. Multi-billion dollar weather disasters are occurring at alarming rates. Some scientists say we’ve passed a tipping point for Arctic melting ice.

  2. Environmental Collapse:Earth Systems are rapidly declining. The modern industrial economy has bankrupted nature. In the short term the banksters on Wall St. win, but in the long term we all lose. Industrial society destroys the rain forests, strip-mines the soil, pollutes the water, eats the seed bank, etc.

  3. Nuclear Meltdowns: Safely shuttering a nuclear power plant requires years of careful planning. Far sooner, we’ll complete the ongoing collapse of the industrial economy. That collapse includes the very real risk of the world’s 443 nuclear power plants melting down catastrophically. Ionizing radiation could destroy every terrestrial organism and, every marine and freshwater organism. Fukushima on steroids!

For Survival, Humanity Needs An Immediate
