Hilo Bay Nuclear Warship

       July 18, 2014 marks the 30^th anniversary of an historic protest in Hilo Bay to uphold the spirit, if not the letter, of Hawaii County’s Nuclear-Free law (ordinance #665) passed unanimously in 1981. On July 18, 1984 hundreds of people gathered on the Hilo docks in protest of a Pearl Harbor based visiting U.S. nuclear armed warship, USS Ouellet. The ship was coming to Hilo at the invitation of the Hawaii Japanese Chamber of Commerce for its “Let’s Sell Hawaii” Festival of the Pacific.

      For three years, despite numerous requests to respect our law, the Navy repeatedly violated the law. In June of 1984 peace activists announced a non-violent blockade of the next nuclear ship visiting Hilo. In response, the Navy, got federal authorities, to establish a martial law situation in Hilo Bay.

      On July 18 two Coast Guard cutters escorted the warship. Military speed boats, zodiacs, helicopters and Navy Seal teams were also in the harbor. Federal authorities declared that anyone entering Hilo Bay to peacefully protest the nuclear warship would be subject to a felony criminal violation with a federal prison term up to three years and a $50,000 fine. Three people entered the water from the point of pier 2 and 3 swimming toward the arriving warship in the harbor channel. They held their hands up in a symbolic message to the ship –”STOP.” Jim Snyder, Warren Wineman, and Jim Albertini were imprisoned and/or fined for their non-violent protest. Jim Albertini was released from Federal prison after a little more than a year of his 3 year sentence mainly due to international protest. For nearly 10 consecutive years, because of his non-violent protests, Jim had to obtain a federal court order to travel from Hawai`i island.

      RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific) is the world’s largest warfare exercise and is now taking place in and around the waters of Hawai`i. Twenty-two nations, 49 ships, 6 submarines, more than 200 aircraft (including killer drones) and 25,000 personnel are participating.

      In short, RIMPAC is an attack on the air, land and sea environment of Hawai`i –it’s people, plants, and animals. It desecrates and contaminates what we hold sacred and sustains our life. All Hawai`i stand together in saying –We want RIMPAC stopped! Now! Ku`e!

Aloha Hawai`i!

      RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific) is the world’s largest warfare exercise held every two years hosted by the U.S. Pacific Fleet Command in and around the waters of Hawai`i. RIMPAC 2014 isscheduled for June 26 till August 1. Twenty-two nations, 49 surface ships, 6 submarines, more than 200 aircraft (including killer drones) and 25,000 personnel will participate. Military units from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the People’s Republic of China, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate.

      During RIMPAC countries conduct live-fire exercises that include surface-to-air missiles, air-to-air missiles, surface-to-surface missiles, laser-guided bombs, and rounds of naval gunfire from surface combatant warships. Fighter Jets, helicopters, bombers, and drones fly air sorties. Ground forces do amphibious landings, etc.  In all, different training events are scheduled in all Hawaiian operations area, encompassing Kāneʻohe Bay, Bellows Air Force Station, the Pacific Missile Range Facility, and the Pohakuloa Training Area.

Donna Grabow has arranged to have a peace contingent in the Volcano July 4 parade which begins at 10AM and should only last an hour. It’s just the 2 of us so far.  it would be great to have company. The parade starts at the Post Office from what I understand.

The World is NOT

a U.S. Colony!

      In Hawai`i, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is moving throughout the islands conducting hearings on so called “Federal Recognition” of Native Hawaiians and how the U.S. DOI can “help”?

      At the same time, the U.S. is sending more troops to Iraq and considering further bombing after decades of U.S. war and sanctions that have decimated the country’s infrastructure and created millions of casualties, refugees, and instability throughout the region. In short, the U.S. created the current mess and further U.S. military action will only make matters worse, not better.

      In both Iraq and Hawai`i, and a host of other countries around the world, the U.S. portrays itself as “the good guy,” instead of the problem. It’s a classic colonial attitude of intervening in the internal affairs of other nations.

      The bottom line is this: The U.S. must stop intervening in the internal and domestic affairs of independent nations all over the world, including the U.S. occupied Kingdom of Hawai`i. Such interference is a blatant violation of international law.

      The DOI’s current efforts at “Federal recognition” and the considering of measures to establish a government to government relationship with Native Hawaiians is a fraud. It is simply trying to do through executive action what the Akaka bill tried to do through Congressional action –that is subvert what justice demands.

      Federal recognition is a trap. It divides Hawaiian against Hawaiian, and others in Hawai`i. It causes confusion, and provides a cover to complete the theft of Hawaiian Kingdom lands.

Justice demands the deoccupation of Hawaii. Justice demands the restoration of the multi-ethnic independent nation state of Hawai`i that existed prior to 1893 and the Bayonet constitution of 1887. Nothing less.
