Two Greatest Threats: Nuclear War & Climate Disaster
Recently, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced that it moved its symbolic nuclear doomsday clock minute hand ahead thirty seconds to two and one-half minutes till midnight. Midnight represents nuclear apocalypse. http://www.commondreams.org/views/2017/01/27/2-12-minutes-midnight-our-world-peril Filmaker Regis Tremblay’s new film just released is entitled “Thirty Seconds to Midnight.” See the online version here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0bsrFyLz6U
Potential nuclear war flash points are increasing: U.S. and NATO are pushing right up to Russia’s border with massive military exercises; U.S. has conflict with China over islands in the South China Sea; North Korean missile tests; and the U.S. putting Iran “On Notice” all threaten possible escalating wars going nuclear, either by accident or design. The unthinkable is again becoming thinkable. A nuclear war will end civilization as we know it.
As for Climate disaster, just review some of the scientific headlines and articles of late The climate deniers are becoming fewer and fewer. The scientific evidence is overwhelming: Sea level rise will be worse and coming sooner. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/new-data-reveal-stunning-acceleration-of-sea-level-rise/ Climate catastrophe arctic ice melt https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/aug/18/ice-scientists-arctic-ice-disappearing-reduce-emissions-peter-wadhams?CMP=twt_gu
What are we to do? Get involved. Join with others in organized efforts. Speak up for peace, social justice, and the earth. Push to get nuclear weapons off hair trigger high alert. Support a UN treaty to ban nuclear weapons and their total elimination. End a new nuclear arms race before it ends us. Act to protect our sacred earth, from Mauna Kea, Pohakuloa, Standing Rock, etc. In the U.S. 54 cents out of every federal tax dollar goes to the war machine. And President Trump wants to increase military spending. There will never be enough money for human needs, fixing infrastructure and building a healthy planet as long as the military industrial complex rules.
Nearly 50 years ago the Rev.. Martin Luther King, Jr. said the United States is “The Greatest Purveyor of Violence in the World Today.” Historian William Blum puts it this way:“From 1945 to 2003, the United States attempted to overthrow more than 40 foreign governments, and to crush more than 30 populist-nationalist movements fighting against intolerable regimes. In the process, the US bombed some 25 countries, caused the end of life for several million people, and condemned many millions more to a life of agony and despair.” – William Blum
So what has changed? The U.S. is waging war, carrying out drone assassinations and Special Ops, and creating refugees in more countries than we know. Obama bombed 7 (or was it 8) countries and dropped more bombs than Bush. What will Trump do?
