You are invited to participate in our STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS march on January 20, 2018.

We will be meeting at Liliu’okalani Gardens, in the gardens across from the Hilo Bay Café.   The march starts at 11:00 a.m. so get there before 11:00. 

 Bring an umbrella.  Protect yourself from the sun. Bring water.

 A limited number of signs will be provided.  People are encouraged to bring their own signs.  Signs that express your concern about rights that have been lost or are likely to be lost under the Trump administration.  Rights such as: environmental protections, health care, social security, medicare, minority rights, DACA, etc.

 Participants are encouraged to car pool.  There is limited parking at and around Liliu’okalani Gardens.  There is also parking in the Wailoa River lot, by the Civic, by the King Kamehameha statue, and in the Hilo Bayfront lots. 

 Individuals who choose not to walk the entire route, from Liliu’okalani Gardens to Mo’oheau Band Stand, can join in from anywhere along the route. 

 This will be a peaceful event. We will march on the sidewalk on the makai side of the highway.   Crossing at Pauahi St will be controlled by march marshalls.

 The march will end at Mo’oheau Bandstand where the Hilo Women’s March organization, will be holding its civic engagement expo entitled “IMUA: Doing My Part” from noon to 3 P.M.

We need to step up the movement for abolishing nuclear weapons.  Major U.S. military installations make Hawaii a prime target

Blast, heat and radiation and other facts about Nuclear weapons

• Which countries have nuclear weapons and how many?

• Who supports a global ban on nuclear weapons?

Effects of a 100-kt nuclear bomb. 3 km radius A radioactive fireball hotter than the Sun and with the force of 100,000 tonnes of TNT kills everyone. 5 km radius The vast majority of people die quickly from blast injuries, asphyxiation or (over weeks) radiation sickness. 10 km radius About half die from trauma and burns.

Speaking at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania way back in May of 1946 Albert Einstein said this about nuclear weapons.  “There is no effective defense against the atomic bomb … It can not only destroy a city but it can destroy the very earth on which that city stood.”

Monday, January 15th is the holiday remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Remember his commitment to non-violence and his prophetic words.
On April 4, 1967, one year to the day of his assassination,  he gave a famous speech against the Vietnam war.  In that speech he said:
The USA is “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today.”  King’s words remain true today, more than 50 years after he spoke them.

Another classic quote, what Dr. King called the giant evil triplets:  Capitalism, militarism and racism.
“The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism.”

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

Let’s take Dr. King’s word to heart.  We need to build a broad based nonviolent resistance movement for justice, peace and the earth. Preparing to run and hide from a nuclear blast is not the answer.  Major military installation in Hawaii make Hawaii a prime target.   Hawaii has more than 100 U.S. military installations including the Pacific Command ( PACOM) at Camp H.M. Smith in Aiea Heights above Aloha Stadium that covers more than half the earth.  Other major force installations on Oahu include Hickam Air Force Base, Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, and Kaneohe Marine Station.  Othe Hawaiian Islands have military facilities too: Pacific Missile Range facility on Kauai, military tracking facilities on Haleakala and military computers in Kihei on Maui, and the Pohakuloa Training Area on Hawaii Island.

We need to stand up against US warmongering, demand nuclear weapons be abolished, and demilitarize Hawaii and the world.  Let’s get to work.  On the first working day of each month, when the State of Hawaii test the nuclear attack sirens at 1145 AM, join in protest from 11:30–12 noon throughout Hawaii in any public place with the message “No Nukes, No War, No Need Siren Missile Tests!  The only true shelter is Peace.”

A False Nuclear Attack notice was sent out via Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (Civil Defense) on Sat. Jan. 13, 2018 at approximately 8:15 AM Hawaii time.  The notice was sent to all cell phone users signed up for automated emergency alerts read as follows:  ” EMERGENCY ALERT BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII.  SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A TEST.”

I had two phone calls from friends, one from Oahu and one from the Big Island who got the message.  My Oahu friend was driving to breakfast with a friend and described people in Honolulu running for shelter.  I was told Tulsi Gabbard just issued a statement that the alert was false.  It’s curious what happened to cause this false alert.  Stay tuned.  Meanwhile …..  SIGN THE PETITION BELOW TO CANCEL THE MONTHLY NUCLEAR ATTACK SCARE TESTS.
