Dec. 11, 2020 Hilo Peace Vigil leaflet on Supremacy of the Military Budget

The Supremacy of the US Military Budget!

If there if one thing Democrats and Republicans agree on it is the supremacy of the U.S. military budget. It’s a battle in Congress to get Covid relief funds, but no problem funding the US War machine. Waging war for corporate interests of the US Empire is a bipartisan issue even in a season of “Peace on Earth – Good Will to All” amidst a global pandemic.

Playing God is Dangerous!

The U.S. and Israel are pushing Iran to the brink of War. Earlier this year Trump ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Recently, all the evidence points to an Israeli assassination of Iran’s top scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, with U.S. and Saudi consent. Now even President elect Joe Biden is saying Iran is moving closer to nuclear weapons. Hypocrisy seems to be the American way. Have we forgotten that the US has one of the world largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons, and is developing a wide range of new “usable” nuclear weapons? Have we forgotten how the US CIA overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran in 1953 and installed a dictator –The Shah of Iran who remained in power with US backing for 26 years until the Iranian revolution of 1979? Ever wonder why Iranians hate the US?  See The Long Shadow of the 1953 CIA Coup in Iran here https://malu-aina.org/?p=7092

The U.S. is not just pushing Iran to the brink of war. The U.S. is pushing the entire world to the brink of war. The US keeps lashing out at Iran and other nations. The US Director of National Intelligence, John Ratcliffe, now says “China poses the greatest threat to America today, and the greatest threat to democracy and freedom worldwide …” Let’s not forget about the US waging war in at least 7 countries over the last 2 decades, orchestrating coups, and bashing Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, Iran and a host of other nations who will not submit to American domination.

The late legendary TV news anchor, Walter Cronkite once said: “War itself is, of course, a form of madness. It’s hardly a civilized pursuit. It’s amazing how we spend so much time inventing devices to kill each other and so little time working on how to achieve peace.” Cronkite was right!

It’s Time for Peace NOT More War!

1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject violence & war as solutions. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, etc.
5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.

Annual Christmas Appeal

Dear friends,                                                                                  December 2020

Once a year we write to ask for your help to sustain the work of Malu ‘Aina, our all-volunteer organization committed to justice, peace and a living planet. What a year this has been! I hope you and your families are well amid this difficult time of a global pandemic. Stay safe! Help protect yourself, your family and friends and we’ll get through this.

2020 marks 41 years since the founding of Malu ‘Aina. Some of you have been with us from the start. Others more recently. Please know, we appreciate all of you, and are grateful for your donations of support and your volunteer hands. You are our base. To maintain our independence and critical voice, we do not seek corporate, or government funding. We started grassroots and want to stay grassroots.

We remain committed to the principle of non-violence, kapu aloha, as our guiding light. While recognizing our imperfections and shortcomings, we believe deeply that the means we use must be in line with the ends that we seek. Currently we are in transition to the next generation of leadership. With team perseverance and your support and solidarity I believe the vision of Malu ‘Aina will be carried forward for generations to come.

We continue to grow food at Malu ‘Aina to share with people in need and we have long served as an emergency food pantry. Each week we also write a new peace leaflet for widespread distribution and conduct a peace vigil at the downtown Hilo Post Office/Federal Building. Friday, Nov. 27, 2020 marked 1000 consecutive weekly peace leaflets, for a vigil that started the day after Sept. 11, 2001. You can read the new weekly leaflet on our website www.malu-aina.org. In addition, we continue our efforts to de-militarize Hawaii and the planet and shift resources from warfare to healthcare, education, and the environment. Protecting the planet from nuclear war and climate disaster are two of the biggest challenges we face. But we also face the urgent health care crisis of this Covid 19 pandemic and all the associated unmet human needs that go with it.

We have plenty of work to do. Mahalo for your continued financial support and solidarity in the journey of protecting one another and this sacred earth –mauka to makai, from the mountains to the sea. You are a blessing and much appreciated.

With gratitude and aloha,

Jim Albertini

National Lawyers Guild Condemns US Illegal Occupation of Hawaii Dec. 4, 2020 Hilo Peace Vigil leaflet

U.S. National Lawyers Guild Condemns U.S.

Illegal Occupation of Hawaii!

THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM AS A SOVEREIGN AND INDEPENDENT STATE

On November 28, 1843, Great Britain and France jointly recognized the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign and independent State, which was followed by formal recognition by the United States on July 6, 1844. By 1893, the Hawaiian Kingdom maintained over 90 legations (embassies) and consulates throughout the world,…

The U.S. National Lawyers Guild, with 70 chapters and over 6,000 members, calls upon the United States of America, the State of Hawaii and counties in Hawaii immediately to begin to comply with international humanitarian law in its prolonged and illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Islands.”

  • NLG strongly condemns the prolonged and illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Islands.
  • NLG also condemns the unlawful presence and maintenance of the United States Indo-Pacific Command with its 118 military sites throughout the Hawaiian Islands, which has caused the islands to be targeted for nuclear strike by North Korea, China and Russia.
  • NLG calls for the United States to immediately comply with international humanitarian law and begin to administer the laws of the Hawaiian Kingdom as the occupied State.
  • NLG calls on the legal and human rights community to view the United States presence in the Hawaiian Islands through the prism of international law and to roundly condemn it as an illegal occupation under international law.
  • NLG supports the Hawaiian Council of Regency, who represented the Hawaiian Kingdom at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, in its efforts to seek resolution in accordance with international law as well as its strategy to have the State of Hawai‘i and its Counties comply with international humanitarian law as the administration of the Occupying State.

See Nov. 10, 2020 NLG letter to Hawaii Gov. Ige https://malu-aina.org/?p=7062
