I never saw the original Tom Cruise “Top Gun” movie in 1986, but I saw lots of publicity about it. To me, it was part of the whole Reagan era military build-up and US imperial interventions. Instead of glorifying militarism and war, I am of the anti-war generation of Vietnam and the need to end all war and the nuclear arms race before it ends all life on the planet. In my view, movies like “Platoon “and “Apocalypse Now” were more about the reality of war and the need for justice and peace in our world.
Come now 2022 and all the fuss about “Top Gun: Maverick” and the publicity everywhere glorifying militarism and war again. It appears to be another Hollywood military propaganda recruiting movie to get young people rushing to enlist as patriotic modern empire robotic war machines. For what? Increased profits of the top global war contractors: Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, BAE Systems, Northrup Grumman, General Dynamics, etc. “Top Gun: Maverick” is Military Propaganda. Let’s be clear. War, weapons, and machinery of war are very profitable for corporations. The National Priorities Project (NPP), an initiative of the Institute for Policy Studies, now estimates that $21 trillion (not $8 Trillion as others have stated) has been spent by the US in “foreign and domestic militarization” in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Hawai’i sees a lot of that militarization and war money. RIMPAC 2022 is coming to Hawai’i. The Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) destructive war games, the largest air, land, and sea war maneuvers in the world, will take place in and around Hawai’i from June 29 to August 4, 2022. RIMPAC 2022 will have over 25,000 military personnel, 38 ships, 170 aircraft, and 4 submarines from 26 countries in practice war simulations engaging “enemy forces.” RIMPAC usually involves bombing and shelling of Pohakuloa in the center of Hawai’i Island.
Join the call to Cancel RIMPAC and establish a demilitarized Pan-Pacific Zone of Peace. Redirect the massive expenditure of funds from war-making to serve humanity suffering from lack of food, water, and other unmet human needs amid a global pandemic, and expanding climate catastrophe. No More War and training for war! Restore the Pacific as an Ocean of Peace!

Restore the Pacific as an Ocean of Peace!
The Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) destructive war games, the largest air, land, and sea war maneuvers in the world, will take place off Hawai’i and the West Coast of the U.S. from June 29 to August 4, 2022. RIMPAC 2022 will have over 25,000 military personnel, 38 ships, 170 aircraft, and 4 submarines from 26 countries in practice war simulations engaging “enemy forces.” RIMPAC usually takes place every 2 years and has been going on for more than 50 years. It has involved the bombing and shelling of the 133,000-acre Military Pohakuloa Toxic Area (PTA) in the center of Hawaii Island, military targets in Hawaiian waters, and amphibious beach landings The massive war drill dramatically contributes to the destruction of the ecology system, aggravating the climate crisis in the Pacific region, and increases the risk of global nuclear annihilation.
2022 RIMPAC includes military forces from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States.

There is no way to argue that there is no environmental or cultural impact to land that has been actively bombed and used for artillery practice for over 6 decades. The US military has been abusing Pōhakuloa for far too long. We must use our aloha for our people and our ʻāina to stop this abuse. If we truly believe we are one with the land, we must protect our ʻāina and ourselves and end this violence. Submit your testimony before it is too late!
