Please read the press release below.

You both know, or should know, the stew of toxins that have been used over the 75 years in live-fire, and other activities, at PTA.

To not be doing air filter monitoring 24/7 for what’s coming off PTA, especially during brush fires, in my view is criminal negligence.  It’s as bad, if not worse, than the Navy contaminating the water supply on Oahu with leaking jet fuel, and taking no action or covering it up.

Dr. Lorrin Pang, MD and 24 years in the Army medical corps, told PTA officials 14 years ago that PTA should have air filters 369 degrees around PTA for a full year, to see what toxins are coming off the base.  PTA has done NOTHING of substance, only token efforts to keep repeating the lie — “NO PROBLEM — PTA IS A GOOD STEWART OF THE ENVIRONMENT.”

Press Release: What toxins are in the Pohakuloa Brush fire smoke?

     On Aug. 10, 2022, another large brush fire has been reported at Pohakuloa.  Less than a month ago, another large brush fire at Pohakuloa was reported. But is any county, state, or federal agency using air filters to determine what, if any, toxins are in the smoke coming off the Pohakuloa fires?  Pohakuloa is home to more than 75 years of military live-fire bombing, artillery, and other munitions use, including radioactive Depleted Uranium (DU) nuclear weapon spotting rounds.  DU metal when burned by high explosives turns into small deadly DU oxide particles that can be carried long distances in the wind and brush fire smoke, and easily inhaled.  Fires and wind at Pohakuloa can possibly spread a wide range of military toxins from PTA off base.

On Aug. 10, 2022, US President Joe Biden signed the Pact Act of 2022, which provides veterans health care for suffering from toxic smoke from military “Burn Pits” in war zones.  That’s important legislation, but what about current troops and civilians living around military bases like Pohakuloa?  We should at least know what toxins, if any, are coming off the base, especially during large brush fires.  But is anyone doing air filter monitoring?

Is Hawaii island experiencing airborne military contamination?  We now know on Oahu, that the military has contaminated the groundwater wells beneath Red Hill fuel tanks but for years no federal, state, or county agencies did anything.

Where are our elected officials and candidates running for public office?  What actions are you taking about the Pohakuloa brush fires and possible toxins coming off the base?

President Harry S. Truman’s decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki set the groundwork for an era of U.S. global hegemony and enriched corporations like General Electric, DuPont, Union Carbide, Bechtel and Westinghouse which made hundreds of billions of dollars developing generation after generation of “first-strike” nuclear weapons.

U.S. leaders, intent on provoking wars with China and/or Russia, appear willing to use these weapons again—if we don’t stop them.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 77 years ago, marked the crucial turning point in the history of the 20thcentury. By the end of World War II, Europe, the Soviet Union and the Japanese Empire lay in ruins, and the United States was in a position of unprecedented power with sole possession of the Bomb.

Unfortunately, the U.S. used this power to launch the Cold War against the Soviet Union, and initiated a nuclear build-up that has impoverished the entire world and brought us to the brink of nuclear oblivion. The question remains: Why did the U.S. government decide to initiate the Cold War with the atomic bombings instead of pursuing a course of diplomacy and negotiated settlement?

There is broad consensus among serious historians that the atomic bombings were not necessary to end the war with Japan. By 1945 Japan was a destroyed and starving nation desperately seeking a negotiated surrender and the Soviet Union was preparing to enter the war in early August, eliminating the need for an invasion of the Japanese mainland. For the Truman administration, the use of the Bomb served two purposes: a demonstration of the terrible power of the split atom to be held against the entire world, and a means to deny the Soviet Union a major role in the post-war settlement. […]

TIME TO SIGN THE TREATY

Ban Nuclear Weapons Now — Before it’s too late!

     The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than it has ever been. It’s time to get the US and the 8 other nuclear powers to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
 
     The United Nations by a vote of 122-1 in 2017 adopted a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It entered into the force of law on January 22, 2021, following ratification by more than 50 countries. The world’s 9 nuclear powers so far have refused to ratify the Treaty. They are now officially Nuclear OUTLAW states.      August 6th marked the 77th anniversary of the US dropping a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan killing an estimated 237,000 people directly or indirectly out of a total population of 330,000. Aug. 9th marks Nagasaki day. The bombs were 13 kilotonnes of TNT equivalent. Nuclear weapons are now about 200-500 kilotonnes.
 
     The escalating war tensions between the US and Russia over Ukraine, and the US and China over Taiwan raise the risk of the possible use of nuclear weapons again, by accident or design. Any use of nuclear weapons could quickly escalate to a global nuclear war, and the end of civilization, and possibly human life on earth. A major nuclear war could result in what has been called “Nuclear Winter,” where Earth temperatures plummet due to soot and debris blocking out sunlight for years.      Humanity is playing with nuclear fire as if climate catastrophe was not bad enough. What’s needed are local and global grassroots peace movements to sound the alarm and demand actions to move back from the brink of nuclear destruction. We need to redirect military funding to reduce CO2 emissions, and other factors damaging the environment, and to fund other urgent unmet human needs.
 
     Hawaii has the largest percentage of land controlled by the military of any state in the US. There are 142 U.S. military bases and installations in Hawaii that occupy 224,897 acres of Hawaiian land. It needs to be emphasized that the independent nation of Hawaii has been under 129 years of illegal US occupation. https://www.nlg.org/nlg-calls-upon-us-to-immediately…/ Hawaii is the US command, staging, and training ground, for nuclear war for more than half the earth’s surface. In the center of Hawaii Island, is the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA), also known as the Pohakuloa TOXIC Area, since it is contaminated with military radiation and a toxic stew of other contaminants. PTA has been bombed for more than 75 years. PTA covers more than 133,000 acres which equals more than 200 square miles – as large as the island of Guam. B-52 and B-2 strategic nuclear bombers fly non-stop nuclear war training missions from Louisiana, Missouri, and Guam to bomb Pohakuloa. The world needs more aloha, not more bombing and war!  Ban Nukes Now!
