Mongoose “Guards” Hen House!

Army Gets License to

Poison Us


with Radiation!

The mongoose has been issued a license

to guard the hen house!

      The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued a license on Oct. 23, 2013 to the U.S. Army to possess Depleted Uranium (DU) radiation at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on Hawaii island and Schofield Barracks on Oahu. These bases have been contaminated with DU for more than 50 years. Continued shelling and bombing of the contaminated sites have likely spread the radiation, endangering the health and safety of troops and residents and visitors alike through inhalation and ingestion of radioactive dust particles.

      Radioactive DU spotting rounds for the U.S. Davy Crockett nuclear weapon system were first used on Oahu and the Big Island, and at military training sites in more than a dozen states and three foreign countries, beginning in the early 1960s. The Army says that DU has been prohibited from use in training since 1996. What this means is that a lot more DU has likely been used at military training sites than just the Davy Crockett DU spotting rounds. DU has been used in a wide range of weapons.

The NRC is an agency made up of people within the nuclear industry. It is mostly a “Rubber Stamp” for the industry rather than a regulator, much like bank regulators “rubber stamp” the abuses of the Wall St. banks, instead of regulating and preventing the abuses causing the ongoing global financial crisis.

What’s needed at the 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area and other military sites contaminated with DU radiation are the following actions:

  1. An immediate halt to all live-fire and and all activities that create dust;
  2. Comprehensive independent testing and monitoring (with citizen oversight) to determine the full extent of radiation contamination at the various sites and off base contamination too;
  3. Full clean up and/or shut down of the sites/bases to prevent further spread of the radiation contamination.

Issuing a license for the mongoose to guard the hen house in no real solution. Having the mongoose report to a commission made up of fellow mongoose about conditions in the hen house will be of no comfort to the hens.

Stop the Bombing!
