The Horror of Fukushima is Far from Over!

Remembering

Fukushima!

Hilo Fukushima Remembrance

March 11, 2014 marked the 3rd anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami at Fukushima, Japan, that resulted in 3 nuclear power plant melt downs and the immediate deaths of eighteen thousand people. A small group in Hilo held an informal gathering at the Hilo Tsunami memorial in Wailoa Park to remember the victims and to say No Nukes. (See photo above.) The horror of Fukushima is far from over.  Radiation continues to be released and the potential consequences of accidents in the removal of fuel pool rods are monumental and catastrophic.  Many people are asking – why isn’t there more reporting on this important global issue?

Naoto Kan, was Japan’s prime minister at the time of the Fukushima disaster. It’s rare that a sitting world leader changes his position completely, but that’s what Kan has done. He explains how he came to oppose nuclear power while still in office, as he weighed Tokyo’s evacuation. “It’s impossible to totally prevent any kind of accident or disaster happening at the nuclear power plants,” Kan says. “And so, the one way to prevent this from happening, to prevent the risk of having to evacuate such huge amounts of people, 50 million people, and for the purpose, for the benefit of the lives of our people, and even the economy of Japan, I came to change the position, that the only way to do this was to totally get rid of the nuclear power plants.”
