The Importance of Speaking Up Now!

Aloha kakou,

This Friday is our 800th consecutive weekly Hilo peace vigil at the downtown Hilo Fed. bldg./Post office.  It’s also Trump’s Inauguration Day so I expect a larger crowd than usual. (See below)  I’ll be bringing a portable sound system for speakers and some music.   Mahalo and solidarity for justice, peace, and aloha ‘aina.

Jan. 20, 2017 Hilo peace Vigil leaflet on Speak Up Now!#2

“When the truth is replaced with silence, the silence is a lie”.   Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko

Speak Up Now!

                                           first they came

First Trump came for the women
and I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t a woman.

Then Trump came for the people with disabilities and I didn’t speak up–
Because I didn’t have a disability.

Then Trump came for Native Americans and Native Hawaiians but  I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t Native

Then Trump came for the African Americans
and I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t African American.

Then Trump came for the Mexicans
and I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t Mexican.

Then Trump came for the Muslims
and I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t Muslim.

Then Trump came for the gay, bi, and trans people and I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t gay, bi or trans.

Then Trump came for the Jews & Palestinians
and I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t a Jew or Palestinian

Then Trump came for the journalists
And I didn’t speak up–
Because I wasn’t a journalist.

Will Trump come for me next?
If I do not speak up Now, who am I?

If Not Now, When?

There is such a thing as being Too Late!

  1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject war as a solution. 3. Defend civil liberties.
    4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, etc.
    5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.
