Below is a partial list of signers of a statement calling for Stopping RIMPAC Bombing of Hawaii. On Saturday, June 30, 2018 protests from 10-12noon are being held on three islands — at Pearl Harbor on Oahu (now postponed to July 7), at Pohakuloa on Hawaii Island, and on the island of Kauai.
President Donald Trump, following his summit in Singapore with North Korean leader, Kim Jung Un, cancelled joint U.S. – South Korea military exercises. Trump said: “We will be saving a tremendous amount of money. Plus, it is very provocative.” Malu ‘Aina says the same can be said of RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific, now Indo-Pacific — the largest military command in the world based on Oahu).
Stop RIMPAC Bombing of Hawaii!
From June 27 until Aug.2, 2018 Some 26 nations (including Israel for the first time), 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are expected to participate in the biennial RIMPAC war games that includes bombing and shelling the 133,000-acre military Pohakuloa Training Area in the middle of Hawaii island.
Hawaii Island is undergoing tremendous trauma from Kilauea Volcano lava flows. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, farms, and businesses. We do not need to add to the trauma by RIMPAC bombing of our island home. We ask that the bombing be stopped immediately.
Mayor Harry Kim has said due to the Kilauea eruption “needs are greater than we’ve ever seen.” If the military wants to truly protect the people of Hawaii island, forgo RIMPAC 2018 and use the money for housing and other lava relief efforts.
