Don’t Glorify War!

This past Memorial Day weekend was a time to remember and honor family members, loved ones, and all who died in wars. For me, it was also a time to remember the service and sacrifice of war resisters, who stood for justice and peace, and putting an end to wars.

We hear a lot about “defending freedom and democracy,” as a cover for 21st century US wars for resources and global domination. But we hear far too little about the courageous people, war veterans and war resisters, who have stood for peace and aloha aina in a deep spirit of kapu aloha – nonviolence.

Here in Hawaii, George Helm and Kimo Mitchell lost their lives in the struggle to stop the bombing of Kaho’olawe. Other people, Kupuna included, guided by a deep spirit of aloha, gave everything they had in the service for justice, peace, and aloha aina. People like Aunty Emma Defreeze, Moanikeala Akaka, Soli Niheu, Kawaipuna Prejean, Puhipau, Dana Park, Yugo and Setsu Okubo, and many, many more. Let us carry on their spirit here on Hawaii island to stop the bombing of Pohakuloa. When asked why he was traveling to Kaho’olawe in 1977, George Helm said: “Simply … the reason is … I am a Hawaiian and I’ve inherited the soul of my kupuna. It is my moral responsibility to attempt an ending to this desecration of our sacred ʻāina …” Bombing Pohakuloa is the desecration of our sacred aina. We have moral responsibility too!

Live Aloha! Stand for Justice & Peace!
