Where is the community Outrage?  And Voices for Justice, Peace, and Aloha ‘Aina

Aloha friends,

We are living in extremely dangerous times.

There is a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the danger of a widening war in the Middle East over Israel/Palestine. On the back burner for the moment is the ongoing war in Ukraine, and growing tensions with Russia and China.  All of these conflicts could escalate to nuclear war in a flash.

Add to these crises the growing threat to continued life on the planet due to man-made climate catastrophe.

Let me emphasize that the elephant in the room of climate catastrophe and much of the global conflict is the US war machine and the corporate war profiteers.  The US military is the largest consumer of oil and the greatest emitter of CO2 on the planet.

Here in the center of Hawaii Island, sits the 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Toxic Area (PTA) that has been bombed, shelled, and contaminated with a wide range of toxins, including Depleted Uranium (DU) for 75 years.  The current commander of PTA, LTC Timothy Alvarado refuses to commit to a public community meeting to respond to community concerns about military activity at PTA.

Malu ‘Aina has been conducting weekly Hilo Peace Vigils every Friday from 3:30-5 PM at the downtown Post Office/Federal Building now entering our 23rd year.  Every week a new peace leaflet is posted at malu-aina.org  The leaflet is also sent out widely by emails and posted on social media. Still, the turnout at our weekly vigils is low.  What has happened to the movement of people standing up for peace?  Where are you?

Each Friday I stand on the corner and offer peace leaflets to people walking and driving by the Post Office.  Yes there are supporters and there are opponents passing by, but the majority reflect INDIFFERENCE.

Together, let’s help make positive change locally and globally.  Let’s stand up together for peace, justice, and aloha ‘aina.  Please get involved. Mahalo.
