Diplomacy Not War!
The World on the Brink of Nuclear Disaster
President Trump’s latest threat toward North Korea to bring “fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before,” is reckless and a blatant reference to a U.S. nuclear attack on Korea. Korea’s response: a threat to bomb a U.S. Air Base on Guam. In a time of increasing tension that risks the possibility of nuclear war by accident or design, what’s needed is not more threats and counter threats, but a tone of caution, dialogue and diplomacy. We need to reduce, not escalate tensions. It’s up to all of us to insure that reckless behavior doesn’t lead to a war that could kill millions in an instant.
To create an atmosphere for discussion, a logical first step would appear to be a halt by U.S./South Korea to large scale joint military exercises and a North Korea halt to any further missile or nuclear tests. China and Russia have both called for this reasonable action.
People need to put themselves in North Korea’s shoes. North Korea lost close to 30% of its population as a result of US bombings in the 1950s. That’s several million people. 78 cities and thousands of North Korean villages were destroyed by U.S. bombing over 3 years. http://www.globalresearch.ca/PrintArticle.php?articleId=22131 And North Korea saw what happened when Libya, under pressure from the U.S. abandoned it’s nuclear weapons program. The U.S. orchestrated an overthrow of the government of Muammar Gaddafi. Libya, once a prosperous country is in total chaos today. The same for Iraq. Remember the U.S. false claim of attacking and overthrowing Saddam Hussein because of his Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). The fact is there were no Iraq WMDs. Saddam had abandoned them but was attacked and overthrown by the U.S anyway. No wonder North Korea feels threatened by the U.S. and doesn’t want to abandon its nuclear program. It believes it is a deterrent to being attacked and overthrown by the U.S.
The U.S. is the only nation in the world to ever use nuclear weapons in war. This week marks the 72nd anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan on Aug. 6 and 9, 1945. It is nothing but U.S. arrogance to say that North Korea must stop its missile tests while the U.S. continues its tests. The U.S. needs to lead the world to disarmament by example. And we the people must demand it.
