Letter to Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources on RIMPAC protests

Wednesday, June 13th, 2018

Mr. Gordon Heit

District Land Agent  DLNR
35 Aupuni St. Rm 204
Hilo, Hawaii 96720

June 13, 2018

Dear Mr. Heit,

I would like to request permission for an ad hoc group of citizens to temporarily park vehicles on a DLNR parcel of land across from the road entrance to Hilo airport along Kanoelehua Ave. Our purpose is to peacefully protest RIMPAC 2018 which will include bombing ‘aina at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA).

RIMPAC 2018 is scheduled for a six week period from June 27 until Aug. 2. Our intent would be to conduct a peaceful sign holding protest along the mauka sidewalk of Kanoelehua at the Kekuanaoa intersection.for approximately 1-2 hrs. in the afternoon 1 day a week during the six week period of RIMPAC 2018. Based on past protests, estimates would be approximately 25 people attending the protests.

It should be noted that the DLNR is currently leasing land to the military at PTA which enables the bombing to take place. It should also be noted that recently a state judge has ruled that the DLNR has failed to Malama ‘Aina as required in that lease. We would hope that the existing PTA lease will be cancelled in the near future or at a minimum not renewed, and the military base will be closed and cleaned up, thereby negating the need for future protests.

Mahalo for your consideration. Aloha & Malama ‘Aina.

Protest RIMPAC Bombing of Hawaii

Wednesday, June 13th, 2018

Stop RIMPAC Bombing of Hawaii!

From June 27 until Aug.2, 2018 Some 26 nations (including Israel for the first time), 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are expected to participate in the biennial RIMPAC war games. RIMPAC includes the bombing and shelling of the 133,000-acre military Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) in the middle of Hawaii island.

Hawaii Island is undergoing tremendous trauma from Kilauea Volcano lava flows. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, farms, and businesses.  We do not need to add to the trauma by RIMPAC  bombing of our island home.  We ask that the bombing be stopped immediately.

Mayor Harry Kim has said due to the Kilauea eruption “needs are greater than we’ve ever seen.” If the military wants to truly protect the people of Hawaii island, forgo RIMPAC 2018 and use the money for housing and other lava relief efforts.

If you would like to add your name to this statement for public release to the news media and government officials, please email U.S. President Donald Trump just cancelled U.S. South Korea joint military exercises and labeled them “provocative and expensive.” The same can be said about RIMPAC!

PROTEST RIMPAC

A peaceful protest of RIMPAC 2018 is scheduled for Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) main gate from 10AM-12 noon. A RIMPAC protest is also schedule on Oahu at Pearl Harbor at the same time and date. Please pass the word to others.
