Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK was assassinated exactly one year to the day he came out strongly against the US war in Vietnam.  On April 4, 1967 he gave his now famous speech “Beyond Vietnam” at the Riverside Church in NY City.  On April 4, 1968 he was assassinated in Memphis, TN while he was organizing for a Massive Poor People’s March on Washington DC for the summer of 68.  He was talking about the need for massive civil disobedience in the nation’s capitol to deal with issues of economic injustice. 

I believe one of King’s statement that sealed his fate  was when he talked about the “giant triplets of evil: Racism, Militarism and Capitalism.” 

Let’s us carry on King’s vision of nonviolence as we continue to deal with the giant triplets of evil:  Racism, Militarism and Capitalism.  Never Give Up!

More than five decades ago, Martin Luther King Jr. implored the civil rights movement to recognize the role of war in creating mass poverty and global carnage. War, King said, robs society of the funds to uplift the poor and kills the working-class people who fight it. In Anti-Communist Fervor, FBI Built a 500-Page File on Coretta Scott King

The FBI’s aggressive monitoring of Martin Luther King Jr. is common knowledge; what’s less known is that Coretta Scott King was also meticulously monitored by the Bureau, which compiled over 500 pages of records on her. While the stated reason was suspicion of Communist infiltration in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the file is more of a testament to the larger racist ugliness festering in the U.S., then as now.

OF NUCLEAR WAR!

Jan. 13^th marked the  2ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALSE EMERGENCY NUCLEAR ALERT about an incoming nuclear missile to Hawaii that caused mass panic.

The article below –“Back from the Brink” speaks to the danger of nuclear war and notes resolutions already passed by dozens of cities including Honolulu, Philadelphia, LA, etc. We need your support. Urge the Hawaii County Council and Councils throughout the U.S. to pass a similar resolution.

      The 133,000-acre Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA), located in the center of Hawaii island, is used as a training ground for nuclear war. Three B-2 strategic nuclear bombers are deployed from joint base Pearl Harbor – Hickam on Oahu and train at Pohakuloa.  B-2 and B-52 strategic bombers fly from Louisiana, Missouri, and Guam to also practice nuclear bombing runs at Pohakuloa. Depleted Uranium (DU) radiation contamination at PTA is due to the training with the Davy Crockett nuclear weapon system spotting rounds dating back to the 1960s. 

      Hawaii County was the first municipality in the US to pass a law declaring itself a Nuclear-Free Zone in 1981. Today, hundreds of other municipalities have followed Hawaii County’s example. Hawaii County also passed resolution 639-08 by a vote of 8-1 in July 2008 calling for an end to all live-fire at Pohakuloa until there was a complete independent assessment and clean up of the Depleted Uranium (DU) contamination at PTA.  To date, this has not been done nor any of the other 7 actions called for in that resolution.

      Today, our world is facing existential threats from climate catastrophe and nuclear war.  Let us find ways to stand up, speak out, and take positive action now.  We all know there is such a thing as being too late! 

Stop Bombing Pohakuloa!  Shut Down PTA!
