Permanent Cease-Fire Now in Gaza and at Pohakuloa! Hilo Peace leaflet 12/15/23

Permanent Cease-Fire Now

in Gaza and at Pohakuloa!

This past week, the US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to uphold international law that demanded an immediate humanitarian Ceasefire in war-torn Gaza and an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. There were 13 countries in favor, 1 against (the US) and 1 abstention (the UK). Even more recently, on Tuesday, Dec. 12th, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a humanitarian Ceasefire resolution in Gaza. There were 153 countries in favor, 23 countries abstaining, and 10 voted against, including the US and Israel.

Stop the Genocide of Palestinians!

More than 1.9 million of the 2.3 million Palestinian people in Gaza have been displaced from their homes by Israel’s bombing and shelling with US weapons. That’s more than 85% of the Gaza population. More than 18,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed and more than 50,000 wounded and the numbers keep rising daily. Remember that Gaza is the size of the island of Lanai and a little more than half the size of the Military Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) in the center of Hawaii Island.

PTA should be called the Pohakuloa TOXIC Area. It is a 133,000-acre training ground for war that has been bombed and shelled for more than 75 years with a wide range of weapons and toxins including, Depleted Uranium (DU) radiation, lead, perchlorate, etc. Pohakuloa is zoned a “conservation district.” How is bombing compatible with a conservation district – conserving the land, historic sites, endangered species, etc.? PTA is a dry and windy area. The native species of the area, Sandalwood, Koa, Mamane trees, etc. have been obliterated. Invasive grasses and other species make the area prone to wildfires started by the bombing and shelling at PTA. Experts have said Pohakuloa should be ringed 360 degrees for a full year with proper air filter monitors to see what’s coming off the base in the wind, smoke, and fires. What is the risk to Hawaii’s water from the toxins used at Pohakuloa? Is Pohakuloa Hawaii Island’s Red Hill and a Lahaina firestorm in the making? Stop Bombing Pohakuloa! Clean Up the Military Mess, and Return the Land to the Hawaiian people.

The US Department of Defense has failed its sixth annual audit in a row, but taxpayer money will keep going down the military drain unless people stand up and speak up now. Total Cost of U.S. Wars Since 2001 — $9,022,893,197,996

That’s more than 9 TRILLION DOLLARS https://www.nationalpriorities.org/cost-of/war/

It’s long past time to shift priorities away from war and toward meeting human needs – feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, healthcare, protecting the environment, child care, senior care, etc.

1 . Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject violence & war as solutions. 3. Defend civil liberties.
       4. Oppose all discrimination: anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, anti-Black, anti-Asian, anti-Russian, anti-LGBTQ, etc. 5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.

STOP ISRAEL’S GENOCIDE

OF PALESTINIANS IN GAZA

Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group. Israel’s bombing and shelling of Gaza (with US weapons) has already displaced 1.8 million of the 2.3 million people in Gaza., an area as small as the island of Lanai. That’s 80% of the Gaza population. If you see something, Say something! Israel, with US assistance, is committing Genocide . The latest media reports citing the Gaza Ministry of Health indicate that the number of people killed and injured in Gaza since 7 October is in the tens of thousands. Women and children have made up more than 62 percent of the fatalities.

War: What is it good for? Absolutely Nothing,”

Except Merchants of Death Profits!

Merchants of Death are Making a Killing in Gaza. The Wall Street Journal published details about the White House’s secretive arms transfers to Israel since October 7. The US has provided Israel with 57,000 artillery shells and 15,000 bombs, including over 5,000 with 2,000-pound warheads. Biden is seeking an additional $14 Billion in military aid for Israel in addition to the $3.8 Billion the US has been sending Israel annually. Also, stop plans for the US to send 24,000 assault weapons to Israeli settlers in the West Bank, This will only increase violence there. Stand up and say NO!

No More Weapons for Israeli Genocide!

Permanent Ceasefire to Save Lives! Silence is Violence!

End Illegal Occupations: Palestine & Hawai’i

Malu ‘Aina Annual Appeal for Support

Malu ‘Aina Annual Appeal

December 2023

Aloha Friends,

Once a year, during this Holy season, I write to ask for your help to sustain the work of Malu ‘Aina, an all-volunteer organization committed to justice, peace, and a living planet for generations to come. It seems such work is more critical than ever before. There is so much suffering from war, injustice, and the climate crisis.

2023 marks 44 years since the founding of Malu 'Aina. Some of you have been with us from the start. Others more recently. Please know, we appreciate all of you for your solidarity and donations of support. You are our base. To maintain our independence and critical voice, we do not seek corporate or government funding. We started grassroots and want to stay grassroots.

We remain committed to the principle of non-violence, kapu aloha, as our guiding light. We believe deeply that the means we use must be in line with the end that we seek. We would like to transition to the next generation of leadership, but the going is tough. We hope the vision of Malu ‘Aina will be carried forward. Your ideas, and suggestions of next-generation leaders, both Volunteer Farm and Board members, are encouraged. (See our enclosed search letter.)

We continue to grow food at Malu ‘Aina to share with people in need, but with limited volunteer farm help. We have long served as an emergency food pantry. Each week we also write a new peace leaflet for widespread distribution and conduct a peace vigil at the downtown Hilo Post Office/Federal Building. Friday, Dec. 1 2023, marks 1157 consecutive weekly peace leaflets, for a vigil that started the day after Sept. 11, 2001. You can read the new weekly leaflet on our website www.malu-aina.org. In addition, we continue our efforts to de-militarize Hawaii and the planet and shift resources from warfare to healthcare, education, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, and protecting the environment. Protecting the planet from nuclear war and climate disasters are the two greatest challenges facing human civilization.

We have plenty of work to do.  Our 40 plus year-old-farm tractor continues to be up and running after being down for nearly 2 years when parts couldn’t be found for needed repairs. But on the farm and in our other work, we could use more people power along with donations. Mahalo for your continued financial support and solidarity in this journey of working for justice, peace, and aloha ‘aina. You are a blessing and very much appreciated.

With gratitude and aloha,

Jim Albertini

Military Code Names for Nuclear Incidents and Accidents

Dull Sword, Bent Spear, Broken Arrow, and NUCFLASH!

Nov. 29, 2023

Letter to the Editor:

The people of Hawaii deserve answers to questions about the P-8A Navy plane accident in Kaneohe Bay.

The P-8A  plane is not only a surveillance plane, but a submarine destroyer.  Was the Navy P-8A plane that went off the runway into Kaneohe Bay armed?
If so, what kind of weapons was it carrying?  Were weapons on the wings and/or in the bomb bay?  Or both? Are the weapons damaged?  How many weapons were on that plane?

The P-8A predecessor, the P-3 Orion, carried Nuclear Weapons, both nuclear depth charges and nuclear torpedoes.  Does the P-8A carry nukes as well?  5 Squadrons of 9 planes each of the P-3 Orion were based at Barbers Point Naval Air Station for decades.  Two squadrons, or a total of 18 planes, were constantly in the air tracking enemy submarines.  When Barbers Point closed in 1999, squadrons were relocated to Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station.
The Navy began a seven-year transition from the P-3 Orion to the P-8 Poseidon in 2012.  The transition included squadrons from Hawaii relocated to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in 2016 and 2017. All of the active duty Navy P-3 Orion squadrons transitioned to the P-8 Poseidon by March 2020.

How many P-8 sub-hunter planes are flying around the Pacific today? How often do they land at military bases in Hawaii?
I co-authored a book in 1980 “The Dark Side Of Paradise — Hawaii in a Nuclear World.” Please see page 7 about the P-3 and pages 25 – 28 of the book about military nuclear accidents   The book is available for free downloading on our website www.malu-aina.org on the right side of the home page.
Let’s all hope the P-8A going into Kaneohe Bay did not involve a nuclear accident.  But the military policy of “neither confirming nor denying the presence of nuclear weapons”, keeps us all in the dark. We need more military transparency! Red Hill, Kaneohe, Pearl Harbor, Pohakuloa, etc.  The people have a right to know what’s going on around them.
