Nuclear War is NOT the Answer!

     In the view of many, we are closer to nuclear war than at any point in history over the U.S. proxy war with Russia in Ukraine. We live in a time when war is promoted and celebrated, and peace is ridiculed and censored. If the world is to survive, we must make some profound changes NOW!

     This week marks the 60 anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In Oct. 1962, the US and the former Soviet Union came dangerously close to nuclear war over Soviet nuclear missiles being placed in Cuba, 90 miles from the US. The US established a blockade around Cuba and demanded the Soviet nuclear missiles be removed. Many US military officials wanted to launch a pre-emptive first strike on the Soviet Union and its missiles in Cuba. President John F. Kennedy said NO. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev reached a back channel negotiated agreement that averted a global nuclear war. The Soviet Union would remove its nuclear missiles from Cuba and the US would remove its nuclear missiles from Turkey on the Soviet border.      What’s behind the current US proxy war with Russia in Ukraine and the rising tensions with N. Korea and China? It really comes down to this: the US economic power elite do not want a multi-polar world. It wants a uni-polar world with the US on top. It wants to maintain dominance – global economic and military unchallenged power. And it will do ANYTHING to maintain that dominance, including regime change, de-capitation, cause chaos, etc., and then repeat, repeat, repeat. To U.S. Representative Kai Kahele:  NEGOTIATE FOR A CEASEFIRE AND PEACE IN UKRAINE!

Since the beginning of this year, the world has marched mindlessly toward wars and military confrontations, starting with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, continuing military attacks on civilians in Yemen and Palestine, and dangerous escalations of war games in the Pacific Rim. Malu Aina Center for Non-violent Education and Action, along with other concerned citizens,  emphatically urge Hawaii’s Congressional delegation to initiate the following actions by the Federal government to defuse the current dangerous policies toward a wider and possibly nuclear war on the Planet:

1) Support a “No Arms Shipment” overseas policy, especially to warring factions.

2) Support the House Resolution 1185 that “calls on the President to embrace the goals and provisions of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and make nuclear disarmament the centerpiece of U.S. national security policy.”

3) Support the repeal of the 1964 Presidential Executive Order that seized 84,000 acres of land at Pohakuloa (as was done to stop the bombing on Kaho’olawe in 1990).

4) Defund and reverse the dangerous escalation of sending billions of dollars of weapons to Ukraine, Taiwan, Israel, Saudi Arabia etc. to fan the flames of war and/ or confrontations.

5) Move at least 50% of the bloated U.S. war budget to urgently-needed Human Needs in the country such as healthcare, housing, education and living-wage jobs.
