Moving Closer to Omnicide!
The definition of omnicide is the destruction of all life, or all human life, on the planet. As our understanding grows, so does the horror. Instead of moving toward a ceasefire in Ukraine acceptable to all sides, more and more weapons are being poured into Ukraine. More death and destruction are the results. What we are now facing is the risk of escalation to the use of nuclear weapons between Russia, the US, and NATO, resulting in the obliteration of all humans and all living species on earth. The US and Russia possess 90% of the world’s nuclear arsenal, enough firepower to destroy the world many times over. US nuclear weapons are based in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey, countries all part of NATO. Britain and France have their own nuclear weapons. The remaining nuclear powers are China, Israel, India, Pakistan, and North Korea.
A ceasefire is desperately needed before further war escalation. Dialogue needs to find common ground for peace. Goodwill diplomacy is urgently needed if the world is to survive and prevent a WWIII nuclear apocalypse. This year’s US military budget is over $800 Billion. That’s more than 13 times the Russian military annual budget of $60 Billion. On top of that, the US is pumping tens of Billions of dollars of additional weapons into Ukraine. More weapons will not bring peace. Violence begets violence. When will we ever learn?
Peace needs to be built on a foundation of justice. Justice for all. In all that we do, the means that we use must be in line with the ends that we seek. Martin Luther King, the apostle of nonviolence said, the means and ends must cohere. The world cannot bomb its way to peace. In fact, to prevent omnicide, the world’s 9 nuclear-armed countries better soon follow what is now international law. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), otherwise known as the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty, entered into force on Jan. 22, 2021. That means all nuclear weapons are now illegal, and that any country, including the US, that possesses nuclear weapons is officially a rogue outlaw state.
Humanity must make the abolition of nuclear weapons and war itself the highest priority. Only then can we harness and redirect our creative energy to solve the climate crisis, meet other human needs, and live responsibly on this earth. Recently, our faithful Hilo peace vigil participant, Margaret Furukawa, celebrated her 89 birthday and donated a new sign with words of wisdom to our vigil. It reads —
Peace is a Victory for ALL Sides! Peace Heals!
1. Mourn all victims of violence. 2. Reject violence & war as solutions. 3. Defend civil liberties.
4. Oppose all discrimination, anti-Islamic, anti-Semitic, anti-Hawaiian, anti-Black, anti-Asian, etc.
5. Seek peace through peaceful means and work for justice in Hawai`i and around the world.
