Oppose Army leases on Oahu

Monday, July 8th, 2024
Aloha All,

The Kahuku Community Association is hosting a very important meeting about the U.S. Army’s proposal to retain State Lands at Kahuku, Kawailoa-Poamoho, and Makua for continued military use.

Wednesday, July 10, 6:00-8:00pm

Kahuku High and Intermediate School

The Army’s 65 year lease on these 6,322 acres of land ends in 2029, and next week we have an opportunity to give oral testimony on the Army’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement here in Kahuku.

The Public Comment Period for the Army’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement is open now and ends on August 7, 2024. The decision to end or renew the lease will largely depend on the public comments received. This is your opportunity to share your thoughts on military use of land in Kahuku as well as other sites.

Please note that initially there were only two meetings, one on the Westside and in Schofield. KCA advocated on behalf of our Ko’olauloa and North Shore communities to have a meeting here, and now it is vital that we show up.

Go to this link to submit testimony online or via mail.

Protest July 6, 2024 at Pohakuloa Main Gate — Cancel RIMPAC Now & Forever & Stop US/Israel Genocide in Gaza

Saturday, July 6th, 2024

Cancel RIMPAC Now & Forever!  Stop the US/Israel Genocide in Gaza!

People in the double digits showed up from various parts of the island for a 10 AM till Noon Protest Sat. July 6th at the Pohakuloa Toxic Area (PTA) Main Gate. The focus was: Cancel RIMPAC Now and Forever, and Stop the US/Israel Genocide in Gaza.  Israel is one of 29 countries participating in RIMPAC 2024.  Things were quiet at PTA today (No bombing or shelling), but there were a lot of honks in support of our protest.  News articles say that from Monday, July 8th until Aug 2, expect increasing military jet activity and noise coming to Pohakuloa from 8 AM until 9 PM.  https://bigislandnow.com/2024/07/06/rimpac-to-bring-military-aircraft-training-to-hawaii-island/

Winds were lite at the PTA main gate today, coming from the west, and our radiation monitor fortunately did not record any spikes above background, for the first time in years during our 2 hour protest.  Usually we record readings several times background, especially when bombing and shelling is going on and the winds are stronger, especially coming from the south.

A RIMPAC protest will be held Saturday, July 20 from 10 AM till Noon fronting the Kamehameha Statue on Hilo Bayfront. Canceling the RIMPAC War Games Now & Forever will be a Peace victory for all! Send this message to all government officials. Mahalo.

A Peace organizing meeting will be held on Monday, July 8th from 6-8 PM at the Keaau Community Center behind the Police station and Health clinic in Keaau.  Come and share your ideas.  Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month.  Please come and pass the word.  Following meetings will be Monday, July 22nd and Monday, Aug. 12th.

Below are a few photos from today’s protest at the PTA Main Gate.

Mahalo to all for standing up — for peace, justice, and aloha ‘aina!
