Peace Not Extinction — Aloha ‘Aina Now!
Tuesday, June 11th, 2024Peace Not Extinction!
The world faces a crisis of extinction through climate disaster and the threat of nuclear war. A common thread in both is what former US President and General Dwight David Eisenhower called the Military Industrial Complex (MIC). Today, the US military is the greatest consumer of oil and the largest emitter of CO2 on the planet. If you don’t think Climate disaster is real, you are not paying attention to reality: More intense storms, drought, flooding, heatwaves, fires, etc. The same can be said of the increasing threat of human extinction through global nuclear war. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Doomsday Clock is now set at 90 seconds to Midnight – the Doomsday Hour.
Former CIA intelligence analyst, Ray McGovern, has updated the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) to MICIMATT – The Military, Industrial, Congressional, Intelligence, Media, Academia, Think-Tank Complex. And McGovern says we are now living in a time of global nuclear crisis he labels Cuba 2.0. Sixty two years ago the Cuban missile crisis brought the world to the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union placing nuclear missiles in Cuba after the US placed nuclear weapons near the Soviet border in Turkey. Fortunately, dialogue took place and the Soviets agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba, and the US agreed to remove its missiles from Turkey and not to invade Cuba. The world took a great sigh of relief. Armageddon was avoided, but barely.
Cuba 2.0 comes down to this. Recently, Ukraine, with US assistance, destroyed three Russian nuclear ballistic missile early warning radar networks, blinding the Russians to possible incoming attack missiles. In response, Russian ships with offensive strike missiles sailed into the Caribbean on the US doorstep, similar to the US poking China by sending ships into areas around Taiwan. Dialogue and Ceasefires toward lasting peace, not more weapons and wars, need to be our world’s guiding light now more than ever. It’s true in Gaza where the death toll and destruction is heartbreaking. It is true in Ukraine. It is true with rising tensions between the US and China, North Korea, and armed conflicts all over the world. Violence begets violence! It is not a path toward peace. Kapu Aloha (Non-violence) must become our way forward. As Bob Dylan said decades ago – “How many deaths will it take till” we learn —
The World Wants Nuclear Disarmament and Climate Stability!
