POHAKULOA FIRE RISK
This week, nearly the entire Big Island, except Hilo and Puna, is under an “ABNORMALLY DRY” weather alert. This includes the center of the island where the military Pohakuloa Toxic Area (PTA) is located. Pohakuloa is a massive 133,000-acre live fire training area. Millions of live rounds, including bombing and shelling, with a wide variety of weapon systems are fired annually at PTA. The bombing and shelling have been going on for more than 80 years and has involved a wide range of toxins including Depleted Uranium radiation, lead, white phosphorus, etc.
The Military Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the lease of 23,000 acres of state land at Pohakuloa noted that since 1975, the military admits to starting 892 fires at PTA, burning tens of thousands of acres in the dry windy area, including more than 17,000 acres off base, destroying an endangered species habitat.
Pohakuloa is zoned “A Conservation District” which is the highest protected land status. Bombing and shelling in a conservation district are not compatible land uses. Stop the Bombing! No new lease or land swap. Make the military clean up its toxic mess and return the land to the Hawaiian people.
