Maui GMO Moratorium Election Victory!

Election Results in

Hawaii & U.S.

I am writing these reflections on the morning following the Nov. 4th elections. I write from the standpoint of a long time non-violent activist for justice, peace and the environment and a small scale organic farmer. One’s standpoint in life determines one’s viewpoint, so here are my views.

For me the brightest spot of the day was the victory of the Maui GMO moratorium initiative that was successful despite $8 million dollars being pumped in to defeat the initiative by Chemical giants Monsanto and Dow. It shows the power of a grassroots broad based effort against corporate power and money.

GMOs, and their big Ag sponsors, are the new plantations seeking to dominate Hawaii and the world. In every way, GMOs violate the basic principle of aloha ‘aina –love for the land and the precautionary principle. GMOs are directly tied to the toxic chemicals produced by their corporate owners whose main concern is short term profit despite long term consequences. Poisoning of air, water and land, and people, plants, and animals are secondary concerns to the corporate bottom line.

No doubt, these same chemical companies will now spend millions more to fight the Maui GMO Moratorium law in court. The battle is not over but a significant victory has been achieved by the Maui vote.

In other election matters locally, some good candidates won. Others lost. In the U.S., the Republicans now control the House and Senate. U.S. imperial wars will continue full throttle which is one thing Republicans and Democrats agree on. From October 26 through November 2, 2014, Hawaiian Civic Clubs from across the Hawaiian Islands and the United States met at its annual convention. Resolution 14-28, acknowledging the continuity of the Hawaiian Kingdom. was passed on November 1, 2014. This is an important vote of Hawaiian sovereignty toward restoring the independent nation instead of being corralled into a U.S. Indian tribe reservation.

The moral of the story on all elections and issues is this. Positive change doesn’t come from the top down. It comes from the bottom up. It takes grassroots organizing to clarify vision and unite people for the common good. We have our work cut out for peace, justice and preserving the earth. We need to unite our issues realizing that an injury to one is an injury to all. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks along the way and never, NEVER, give up!

Monsanto , Dow, and Big Land owners Buying the Vote in Hawaii

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

Aloha!
Hope you will SHARE these 2 important pieces of information!

Maui anti-GMO rally

( and Forward Progress PAC spent nearly 382,000 to defeat Maui council candidates)

And they’ve still got another week to spend MORE. Holy $#%!

Scroll to the bottom to see that Monsanto and Dow Agrosciences have spent $7,896,163 LYING to the people of Maui.

The “Citizens against the farming ban” campaign is funded entirely by Monsanto, Dow & one other buddy. “Citizens” my ass.

It takes more than $8 mill to hide your dirty secrets.
It takes more than $8 mill to pay us off for making our kids, land and oceans sick.
I’m glad you spent all that money. Now the whole population of Maui will know how scared you are of the TRUTH.

The truth will ALWAYS come out, not matter how many millions of dollars you spend trying to bury it.

Campaign disclosure is out and, as suspected, Monsanto and Dow are the sole funders of “Citizens Against the Maui Farming Ban”. And wow baby! Did they fund it! $7,896,163 worth!
As of the filing date, Monsanto and Dow had spent a total of $6,335,083.

Question to Maui/Molokai people voting NO on the GMO Initiative: Now that you know that “Citizens Against…” is ENTIRELY funded by Monsanto and Dow and that they’ve paid in $7.9 million to influence you, does that change your opinion?

HEADS UP ON THIS SLEEPER!!!

Ag 2

Looks like the jig is up on this one. Nice try #localfoodcoalition. You may have actually had support for this if you hadn’t had been so #sneaky.

The #2 Ag Amendment on the ballot is just a way for (a) large land owners to get bond funding without dedicating their ag land to actual agriculture, using good groups of smiley young farmers as pawns – who couldn’t qualify for the bonds or loans in the first place.

#isupportsmallfarmers, not sneaky billionaires.

Re: #2 Ag Amendment – Half a million dollars spent to push this amendment – by one guy. WTH?

People have been wondering who has been supplying the Big Money behind the campaign to pass the Ag Bonds Con Am.

The spending report by the “Local Food Coalition” is now online.

Here is their organizational report:

https://nc.csc.hawaii.gov/NCFSPublic/ORG_Report.php

And here is their financial disclosure report:

https://nc.csc.hawaii.gov/NCFSPublic/ReportDetail.php

Their org report discloses the names of three officers. Brandon Lee is the Chairman. Murray Clay is the treasurer, Eric Datta is the First Deputy Treasurer. All three are employed by Ulupono Initiative.

The financial disclosure report shows they have raised $505,250. $500K of which came from Ulupono Initiative. They had spent, as of the last day in the reporting period, $352 K, with almost all of it going to Anthology Marketing to run their campaign.

It is fair to say, as I had recently started doing, that the Local Food Coalition is a “wholly-owned” subsidiary of the investment firm, Ulupono Initiatives.

Early statements by supporters of the Coalition had assured us that all their contributions came from “their members.” While, technically, true, that was a statement intended to mislead. The money is all (meaning 99%) coming from Pierre Omidyar.

Malu ‘Aina new water tank

Malu ‘Aina new water tank

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Iselle downed two large ohia trees on our Malu ‘Aina main water catchment tank and broke all the pipes going in and out of the tank.  It still holds some water so we ran new pipes in and out to make due.  The storm damage here could have been much worse but it was bad enough.  Just yesterday we finally got a new tank set up and gutters and pipe going in.  Last night’s rain put about 600-800 gallons in the new tank so we are happy. Now we have the run a new line from the tank to connect to the house.

Issues on a Grand Scale

Climate Change is

Overriding Issue of

Survival!

But like lemmings, many humans race to the cliff!

While there are many pressing issues of justice, peace, and environmental destruction facing us here in Hawaii and in every country around the world, there is no question that on the grand scale of issues like Nuclear War, Climate Change trumps all. It is an issue of species destruction. Symbolic of how humanity is growing very short of time in addressing changes that need to be made to deal with this human-made disaster, here is a short video that teaches climate change in one minute and 31 seconds:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UatUDnFmNTY&feature=youtu.be

The end of “normal” is here already. The climate changes are already upon us and accelerating at an alarming rate. Here on Hawaii island the NOAA weather observatory located on Mauna Loa recorded the monthly average for CO2 in the atmosphere at 401.33ppm. In early May 2014, the U.S. federal government’s National Climate Assessment, the national scientific community’s definitive statement on the current and future impacts of greenhouse gas emissions was released.

Compiling the efforts of 300 leading climate scientists and experts, the message is “bleak” as the NCA details how human-caused global warming is being felt “here and now” nationwide. As a consequence of the nearly two degree Fahrenheit rise which occurred throughout the country over the past century, the report says, Americans are experiencing water scarcity in dry regions, increasing torrential rains in wet ones, increasingly severe heat waves, worsening wildfires, and the death of forests as a result of heat-loving invasive insect species. And all of this is likely to worsen as average temperatures continue to increase. The authors… estimate that global warming could exceed 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the United States by the end of this century.

Following its release, many noted that the report provides an abrupt wake-up call to politicians and the fossil fuel industry, saying that their ongoing denial of mankind’s disruptive impact on the planet has significantly hastened many of these dangerous effects. “As our communities reel from droughts, floods, forest fires, fossil fuel disasters, crop failures and more, it becomes harder for these polluters and those aligned with them to hide just how out of touch from reality they are,” said Trip Van Noppen, president of Earthjustice. “The divide between the fossil-fuel industry’s misguided attempts to place profits above the needs of our families and communities grows as each new scientific report is released,” Van Noppen continued. “The National Climate Assessment paints a bleak picture, but it is a picture we have seen clearly for many years, and we have to act on it now.”
